FTC Green-lights EA's BioWare/Pandemic Acquisition

Antitrust regulators have cleared Electronic Arts' $775 million purchase of VG Holding Corp, which owns two software studios from private equity fund Elevation Partners, BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios.

Activision Financial Result Reveals 'Guitar Hero III' Rocks, New Titles

Activision's latest financial numbers show a net revenue increase of 69% from last year's $188.2 million to $317.7M. Net income jumped from a $42.6M loss to a $28.5M gain. In the conference call, Activision executives said that while it's only been in stores for a week, GH III is the best launch title in company history, selling $100M in North America alone. Looking ahead, Activision is planning new titles in the Call of Duty, Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero franchises and has plans for new titles in cooperation with Dreamworks (Monsters Vs. Aliens, Madagascar II, Kung Fu Panda,) two unannounced superhero titles and, to top it all off, its first James Bond-licensed title.

This update brings Activision's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines retail game to v4.3 (requires v1.2 patch installed) and addresses a number of known issues, gameplay tweaks, bug fixes and so forth.

Black Element Software announces that its single-player oriented sci-fi FPS will be available on IDEA Games' digital distribution service Sprocket later this month. Alpha Prime features a varied balance of combat and more technical activities such as hacking and remotely controlling robotic devices.

Xbox 360 Fall Update Gets Parental Timer

A flier included with the Guitar Hero III keychain inadvertently reveals that in December there will be an Xbox 360 firmware/dashboard update adding a new feature. The Parental Timer is a simple tool that lets you manage how much time your kids spend on their Xbox 360. It will allow parents to manage time in daily or weekly increments, and easily to suspend and add time.
