PacMan Reigns All Game Characters!

by Rainier on Dec. 19, 2001 @ 5:04 p.m. PST

Forget Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and Harry Potter, it’s that ghost munching yellow ball that’s still the favourite, as Pac Man tops the Gameplay poll to find the greatest video game character of all time.

7,182 games fans voted in the games retailers online poll showing support for the character they like the most. A whopping 6,125 (85%) votes proved that time hasn’t effected the appeal of the mighty Pac Man, as he stormed ahead to take the title of 'www.gameplay.co.uk All Time Greatest Video Game Character.'

All though classic characters like Sonic and Mario featured in the poll, it was the sheer volume of votes for Pac Man that was the real story. The full results are below:

(Votes | Percentage)
1. Pac Man 6125 85.2%
2. Sonic The Hedgehog 292 4.1%
3. Mario 260 3.6%
4. Solid Snake 203 2.8%
5. Lara Croft 159 2.2%
6. Max Payne 77 1.2%
7. Donkey Kong 25 0.4%
8. Harry Potter 18 0.3%
9. Pikachu 12 0.2%
10. Ray Man 11 0.2%
Total Votes 7,182

Given these results its no surprise that since Pac Man first appeared on the scene in the early 1980s there have been a multitude of versions of the original game, making Pac Man a household name and giving the character cult status. New versions of Pac Man continue to appear such as the Ms Pac Man series and the GameBoy Advance’s Pac Man Collection.
