A Hard Day’s Fright

by Thomas on Jan. 10, 2002 @ 3:50 p.m. PST

Junior monsters offered 300 levels of fun-filled ‘work’ in Disney Interactive’s junior game for Windows PC. We all know what they do at night, but what do monsters do throughout their working day?

Now, with the release of Disney’s Monsters, Inc. Monstropolis Mission, children aged five to eight will be able to find out for themselves by signing up to become the latest employees of Monsters, Inc. and getting some ‘on the job’ training.

Monsters, Inc. is the fourth film from the hugely successful partnership between Disney and Pixar Films, following on from Toy Story, A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2.

Having opened in the US on November 2nd, Disney/Pixar's Monsters, Inc. quickly became the most successful animated film of all time, taking a record-breaking $63.5 million in its first three days (this was more than 10 per cent better than the previous record-holder, Toy Story 2 - also from Disney/Pixar). In addition, Monsters, Inc.'s impressive 'opening' figures make it the sixth most successful film ever, ahead of such blockbusters as Pearl Harbor and Titanic. Not only did the film attract huge audiences, it also sent them away satisfied, as an exit poll carried out by Cinemascore saw 100 per cent of polled audiences award the film an A+ grade, while a similar poll by NRG saw 100 per cent of filmgoers rate the film as 'excellent' or very good'.

The film features Pixar’s trademark 3D digital animation style, backed up by a heavyweight voice talent cast which includes: John Goodman (Sulley), Billy Crystal (Mike), Steve Buscemi (Randall), James Coburn (Waternoose) and Jennifer Tilly (Celia).

Moving the action from the big screen to the computer monitor, Dinsey’s Monsters, Inc. Scream Team Training, sees junior monsters ‘clock on’ at Monsters, Inc. to play as the company’s newest employee (taking the part of one of six monsters). The ultimate goal is to become ‘Top Scarer’ by the end of the game, but players can reward themselves along the way by acquiring Employee of the Day, Week, Month or Year awards.

Dinsey’s Monsters, Inc. Scream Team Training features 300 levels of game activity, evenly distributed over 10 separate ‘work rooms’. Young players begin in the post room and earn the right to move into different work areas by completing a succession of fun and challenging tasks. The game features a number of the favourite characters from the movie, including Sulley, Mike, Boo, Roz and Randall.

Each completed task is rewarded with a key card, which the player can use to access the next room. These key cards are stored in the player’s in-game locker for use in later games and can even be saved to the Desktop for emailing between players.

Disney’s Monsters, Inc. Scream Team Training will be available for Windows PC CD-ROM and Macintosh from [territory date]. Remember… at Monsters, Inc. “We scare because we care!”
