Wanna blow up Britney Spears? 'Hot Air Speakers'

by Thomas on Aug. 20, 2002 @ 2:42 p.m. PDT

Just when you thought they couldn’t get any smaller, Ellula, a cutting-edge manufacturing company, introduces the future of portable sound systems— inflatable speakers. For the first time ever, speakers can be inflated within mere seconds, just like a beach ball, and then plugged into your portable CD player for use anywhere people want to listen to their favorite music, making them perfect for the beach, dorm rooms, picnics and travel.

Already a smash hit in England, Ellula’s Hot Air Speakers are currently available on www.ellula.com, and in August a line will be available at Bloomingdales with a full retail launch in October 2002.

The Ellula Hot Air Speakers can be used with other portable systems including laptop computers, MP3 players, Gameboys—basically any piece of equipment that allows for the hook-up of external speakers. When inflated, the speakers stand nine inches high. Deflated these speakers are a mere two inches—perfect for a backpack, briefcase or beach bag. The sound quality is better than conventional portable speakers, which don’t allow for much range and have a hollow, “tinny” sound. With Ellula’s Hot Air Speakers, the plastic skin works as a resonating surface, allowing a richer and wider range of sound with more bass. The speakers can be plugged into a wall socket or, for travel and outdoor use, the system comes with a portable battery pack that takes six AA batteries.

“We’re very excited to be launching the Hot Air Speakers in the U.S.,” said Bill Wagoner, president of Ellula US. “While many speakers claim to be portable, how many can you deflate and stick in your jacket pocket?”

Currently, the Hot Air Speakers are available in two styles, the C-2 and the Revo. The C-2, a sleek design that’s available in a variety of colors and geared toward the more sophisticated market, retails for $49.95 and will be available at Bloomingdales beginning in August. The Revo, geared more towards the teen crowd with a bubble-like shape and day-glo colors, retails for $45 and is available at www.ellula.com with a full retail launch in October.

The Ellula Hot Air Speakers use flat speaker technology from NXT to produce multi-directional sound and provide the ultimate in portable sound quality. Through an exclusive license and patent with NXT, creators of the flat panel speaker system, Ellula Hot Air Speakers are the only speaker systems in the world that use an inflatable form to produce sound. (Technical data on NXT technology can be found at www.nxtsound.com).

“Ellula Hot Air Speakers can be molded into basically any shape that can be imagined,” continued Wagoner. “This allows for a limitless number of future designs. These could include a guitar, a can of soda, even a caricature of Winston Churchill.”
