Hidenori Tanaka of Japan became the first Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup videogame world tournament champion, Electronic Arts announced today. The thrilling international videogame tournament finals took place yesterday at the Tower of London in the UK, where competitors between the ages of eight and fourteen years, from twelve countries around the world, including France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Japan, Italy, USA, UK, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Holland, and Brazil competed for the prestigious world champion title.

During the International Finals event, competitors donned authentic Quidditch robes and showed off their videogame skills, speed and special moves during action-packed matches on the Nintendo GameCube™, the official sponsor of the event. Players were cheered on by a group of cast members from the Warner Bros. film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, including Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy™), Josh Herdman (Gregory Goyle), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom™), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnegan), James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), and Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley™). The cast greeted the finalists and opened the tournament before enjoying the tournament’s spirited atmosphere.

In the Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup game, licensed by Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Harry Potter fans are for the first time able to fully experience the magical power, speed, and competition of Quidditch, the favorite sport of witches and wizards. Developed by EA’s UK studios, the team behind the worldwide success of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone™ and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets™ games, the new title features connectivity between the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy® Advance to allow players to trade Quidditch Cards and team up together for co-operative gameplay. Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup is available on the Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox™ video game system from Microsoft, and PC-CD.
