2. Installation of Patch

Note: Black & White will only install and run on machines installed with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000.

1. Start your machine and wait for the Windows 95/98/ME/2000 operating system to load.

2. Place the Black & White CD in the CD drive.

3. Windows will automatically detect the CD and begin the installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install Black & White. If you need to install DirectX 7.0a, you can do this as part of the installation. Black & White will then be ready to play.

4. The installation program creates a program group called Lionhead Studios Ltd and adds it to your Start/Programs menu. Left-click on the Start button on your Windows task bar. Under Programs/Lionhead Studios Ltd, select and click Black & White to play.

5. Next, execute the patch by double clicking on the patch program. The patch will automatically detect the installed version of B&W and perform the necessary upgrades.

Note: Should Windows fail to recognize the CD and fail to run the installation program, run Setup.exe from the root directory of the CD.

3. DirectX

If you try to run the game without DirectX7.0a installed, you will receive the following error message:

"The Black.exe file is linked to the missing export Ddraw.dll:DirectDrawCreateEx".

If you try to run the Black & White Setup application without DirectX7.0a installed, you will receive the following error message:

"The setup.exe file is linked to the missing export mfc42.dll:66461"

If you receive either or both of these messages, you need to install DirectX7.0a. For your convenience, we have included DirectX7.0a on the Black & White CD.

a) Installing DirectX7.0a directly from CD (if you skipped it during game install)
Black & White comes with DirectX7.0a and will prompt you to install it during installation. If you would like to install it manually, make sure the Black & White CD is in the CD-ROM drive change to the following folder on your CD-ROM drive:

"Directx"

and double-click on DXSETUP.EXE

b) DirectX7.0a and supported hardware
We recommend that Black & White be run with DirectX compatible sound boards and video cards. While there is a chance that Black & White will run with non-DirectX compatible hardware, you may find that:

  1. Sound quality suffers.
  2. The game runs slower.
  3. The game does not run at all.

If your sound card or video card does not support DirectX, please contact your vendor.

4. Uninstall

To uninstall Black & White go to Programs/Lionhead Studios Ltd/Uninstall Black & White in the Start menu. Left-click on Uninstall Black & White to proceed.

Should this fail to work, left-click on the Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel. Now find Add/Remove Programs and double left-click to run.
Scroll down the list until you see Black & White, select it and left-click on Add/Remove to uninstall.

If the uninstaller fails to completely remove Black & White (it may not, for example, delete your Saved Games folder), delete the folder to which you installed the game. Thus, if you have used the default directories, double left-click on My Computer, double left-click on the C: drive, double left-click on Program Files, left click on the Lionhead Studios folder, then right click and select Delete. Click Yes to confirm. This will send the remaining files to the Recycle Bin, which you will then need to empty.

5. Gameplay additions

Planting a tree away from any buildings will produce more trees. A green puff of smoke confirms this action.

Watering any tree will encourage that tree to grow (except trees planted near your Temple). This is essential on later quests where wood is a premium.

When you have a villager in your hand, a house with the blue man symbol indicates his home.

Miracle Dispensers - You are able to build your own one-shot Miracle Dispensers by combining six scaffolds created at your workshop. Once placed on the landscape, you can create one-shot Miracles by charging a Miracle in your hand and casting it on the Dispenser. These can be moved from the Dispenser, placed anywhere and saved for later use. You can cast any Miracle on a created Dispenser to create a one-shot Miracle of that type. This is an especially useful tactic, as you can create one shot Mega-blasts and place them in the Vortex for use in later lands.

6. Controller Notes

Control key additions:

Please note: These will be overwritten if you assign these keys to other commands in the ingame Options/controls menu.

R - repeat Miracle (same as using the repeat Gesture).
M - Miracle selection mode (same as using the Miracle Gesture).

Pressing & holding Ctrl + Shift will zoom you close into your hand. Releasing them will return you to your previous view.

P5 CONTROLLER:

Black & White fully supports the P5 technology from Essential Reality.
This functionality is available to anyone who is using the P5 and with this patch installed.

The P5 allows the user to interact with Black & White, via the use of a virtual glove worn on the hand, in a completely new and natural way not possible before.
In the virtual Black & White world, you will now be able to realistically interact with the world by using natural hand motions, that mimic the real world tasks. Tasks such as exploring the world, interacting with objects, pulling up trees, powering up Miracles, stroking or slapping your Creature together with many other interactions all have been programmed to be accomplished using natural hand gestures instead of the existing mouse interface. This adds to the overall immersiveness and realism of the game.

In Black & White, the goal has always been to produce an interface, which is entirely uncluttered by the traditional icons, menus and instead concentrate on the natural real-world interactions with which everyone is familiar. As such, the Black & White hand is really to be viewed as an extension of your own hand.

Allowing the user to manipulate the world using their own natural hand motions enhances this experience. The P5 creates the illusion that the world behind the screen is a real world.

More details of this technology can be found at www.essentialreality.com.
For any users who already have the P5, be sure to check up that you have the latest patches available for Black & White at www.essentialreality.com.

In order to configure the P5 device:
While playing the game, hit ESC to enter the Menu System.
Under the OPTIONS tab, you will see 2 sliders that allows you to control the acceleration and click sensitivity.

The higher the acceleration, the faster the hand of god will move when you move your own hand in space. The higher the click sensitivity, the less you have to bend your fingers to register a click.

7. How to create your own player symbols and Creature tattoos

Black & White comes with 16 pre-defined player symbols/Creature tattoos. The same images are used for both. You can replace any of these images with your own. To do so, place a 64x64 greyscale .bmp image (8-bit) called symboln.bmp (where n is a number from 1 to 16) in your profile directory (default directory will be c:program filesLionhead Studios LtdBlack & Whiteprofilesyourname - where yourname is the name of the profile you created). The player
logo/Creature tattoo will then be available to select in the usual ways.

To swap back to the default logos/tattoos, simply delete the image files you created.

Tip: Design your logos on a black background for best results.

8. Network & Out of Sync Recovery Feature

Online Requirements
Internet features require TCP/IP Internet connection at 56Kbps or faster, or Internet access via LAN (Local Area Network).

Network Problems

Note to AOL® users: If you use AOL or any other system that doesn't use Windows dial-up networking, you will need to manually connect to the internet before running the game if you want to use any of the online aspects.

To force Black & White into thinking that there is an OPEN & READY internet connection you can do the following:

1. Right mouse click on the runBlack.exe file - the default location for this should be C:Program FilesLionhead Studios LtdBlack & White - and select the Create Shortcut option.
2. Right mouse click on the Shortcut to runBlack.exe file and select the Properties option.
3. In the box labeled Target type in the following command at the end of the path description:

4. Click the OK button at the bottom of the box and then double-click the Shortcut to runBlack.exe to run the game.

Multiplayer - Out Of Synchronization Recovery Feature

If a game goes Out Of Sync, data is transferred to all client machines for an Out Of Sync restart (This may take a few seconds, dependant on the number of people in the game). This feature can be used as follows:

1. LAN

When waiting for a person to join you in an out-of-sync game, have the "Restore Out Of Sync" checkbox turned on. The game will then be in "Out Of Sync" restore mode. You will not be able to change the map (It will be the same map as the Out Of Sync game). You will only be able to change teams and start the game.

2. Internet

When creating a channel, have the "Restore Out Of Sync" checkbox turned on (this will only be visible if you have an Out Of Sync restore available).

Only people with the Out Of Sync restore data, sent around when the game went Out Of Sync, will be able to join you and replay the game. You can change the teams/clans to how they were in the previous session manually.

Note that Out Of Sync Restore can only be used for a multiplayer game, which is created straight after the game that went Out Of Sync. If another multiplayer game is played in the meantime, it is not possible to restore the previous game.

9. Creature Homepages

Black & White allows you to publish webpages containing all the information about your Creature. This information is continuously updated by the game and stored on your local machine.

You can upload your pages for other people to view by using the
CreatureUpload.exe application. These Creature pages are hosted as part of the bwgame Creature Page hosting service (www.bwGame.com) and community pages.

There is an external application called "CreatureUpload.exe" (the default directory for this will be c:Program FilesLionhead Studios LtdBlack & White), which allows you to upload your Creature info..

To use this service, you MUST be registered at www.bwgame.com (and therefore have a username and user password). In addition, you must have played at least once over the Internet or entered your registration details into the "over the Internet user details" dialog box in Black & White. You MUST also have a Creature.

After successfully uploading you can view your Creature page at:

http://www.YOURREGISTRATIONNAME.bwcreatures.com
or http://www.bwcreatures.com/YOURREGISTRATIONNAME

Where YOURREGISTRATIONNAME is the name you chose when registering online.

The images and information about your Creature are also stored on your hard disk. You can access this information by opening the "html directory" in your profile directory (.ProfilesMyregistrationnamehtml) . This html page is template based, so you may change it. This does not change your Creature data however.

It is a normal HTML file with same special keywords which gets parsed whilst creating the Creature html file. So anybody with basic HTML skills can create their own template file.

Please note: You cannot upload this offline version to the bwgame Creature pages.
If you want to upload the offline generated Creature HTML page to your own webpages, using the default/shipped template file, you may have to change the path of the images. This can be done at the top of the Creatures html page (source of file).

10. Naming your Villagers from your email program

Black & White can import names from your computer's email contact list and use these as names for your Villagers. Additionally, Black & White can retrieve the Subject & From Field from your emails and notify you in-game that you have received an email from any of your villager contact names. Additionally, if you are running Black & White and receive an email from a new contact, this name will be assigned to a Villager, who will notify you of the email.

Black & White supports Microsoft Outlook(TM) or any POP3 compatible Mailbox. It does NOT support Microsoft Outlook Express(TM).

To activate the email feature, you need to run the Black & White Setup
application, click on the email settings button and select your player profile from the drop-down list.

Check the first box (check for Internet email) to activate this email feature.

Check the second box if you are using Microsoft Outlook. If you are using a POP3 mail system, leave this box unchecked and fill out your POP3 server settings in the fields below.
