by Rainier on Sept. 29, 2003 @ 1:37 a.m. PDT

Sony Computer Entertainment UK today announced that it is to begin offering its ground breaking PlayStation 2 at £139.99 commencing October 1st 2003. Also available from the same date, is a limited edition 'satin silver' PlayStation 2 which comes packaged with two silver versions of the classic Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK®2) for £149.99. Both machines feature the new built-in IR receiver, improved DVD-R/DVD-R/W playback and a significantly quieter fan.

Significant advances in manufacturing have produced increased efficiencies and further economies of scale, to help create the environment to enable us to pass these substantial savings straight to PS2® customers.

Building upon the massive sales momentum of the past few months, as stimulated by a raft of quality software launches (including the chart topping EyeToy: Play, SOCOM; US Navy Seals, Formula One 2003 etc.), SCE UK is well positioned to further capitalise on the significant demand for PlayStation 2. In the run up to the Christmas period, a wealth of outstanding games will be launched for PlayStation 2 numbering 175 in total, bringing the total number of games available to 850. These include, from SCEE – Dog's Life, EyeToy: Groove, World Rally Championship3, Time Crisis 3, Ghosthunter, Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked and Loaded, and Jak II: Renegade. From independent publishers, titles include Pro Evolution Soccer 3, from Konami, and SSX 3m, Medal Of Honor Rising Sun, Lord of The Rings Return of The King from Electronic Arts®, Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time and XIII from UbiSoft, Tony Hawks Underground from Activision, NBA Jam and Gladiator:Sword of Vengeance from Acclaim.

With across the board support from the world's leading software developers, a wealth of outstanding games launching in the run up to Christmas, and unbeatable technology, PlayStation 2 now represents amazing value for money with its new price point.

Ray Maguire, Managing Director of SCE UK commenting on the move said,

"With this attractive new price point, with PlayStation 2's unbeatable technology package, compelling on-line experiences, and with a vast portfolio of over 850 software titles including mass market appeal titles such as EyeToy: Groove and Dog's Life, we believe there has never been a better time to enter the PlayStation 2 experience."

"At this new price point of £139.99, the clear market leading PlayStation 2 should remain the computer entertainment system of choice for an even wider and more diverse audience."
