Groove Games Launches Play for Cash Service

by Rainier on Nov. 30, 2006 @ 4:39 p.m. PST

Gamers can now download real video games for free and play them in a secure, online, multiplayer environment, and they can win cash while they’re doing it. An initiative of Groove Games, SkillGround is the world’s first platform where people of all skill levels can play real video games head-to-head for cash prizes or just for fun.

SkillGround will offer all major genres of videogames including FPS, racing, fighting and sports. Launch titles include WarPath, Close Quarters Conflict, L.A. Street Racing and Kung Fu: Deadly Arts. All games have multiple play modes, including the ability to challenge a single opponent to a head-to-head competition. SkillGround’s games should not be confused with simple, online casual games - they are real video games of comparable quality to those available at retail.

“SkillGround operates on the principles of fun, fairness and simplicity,” said Jon Walsh, CEO of Groove Media Inc. “Our unique skill ranking system, which gives all players a numerical indication of their skill relative to other players in the system, is a particularly exciting aspect of the service. For the first time, no matter what your level of ability, you will be able to find opponents of similar skill to play against - for free or for cash prizes. This brings competitive prize-based online gaming to a whole new, much larger audience. We’re extremely proud to be able to offer this unique and innovative service to gamers around the world.”
