Transatlantic Showdown Pits Europe's Best Gamers Against The U.S.

by Rainier on March 23, 2006 @ 3:47 p.m. PST

Twenty-four of Europe's best professional video game players landed in New York Wednesday night, ready to do battle with the best of the U.S. in the first Transatlantic Showdown video gaming competition.

The event, to be held this Friday through Sunday March 24-26 at the Time Warner Center in New York, will match the top U.S. and European professional players in such games as Counter-Strike, Quake 4 and Warcraft III. At stake: over $100,000 in cash and prizes. The participants won their spots by triumphing in open competitions sanctioned by the Global Gaming League and its European partner, ClanBase.

"After coming in on this historic flight, we are eager to see some of the worlds best gamers compete in the Big Apple for some serious prize money and bragging rights," said Ted Owen, Chairman and founder of Global Gaming League.

The weekend event, sponsored by Intel, is free and open to the public. In addition to the gaming exhibition, the public can browse through an Intel DuoZone technology village, watch the TransAtlantic Showdown gamers compete using Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology based laptops and hear, via a limited number of free tickets, a live concert by Grammy-winning artist Gavin DeGraw on Saturday night. Live streaming broadcasts of the weekend event will also be available at http://www.ggl.com.

"Competitive gaming and entertainment usage models for our best yet mobile platform will provide an action-packed weekend for those who can stop by the Time Warner Center in person or catch the action through our gaming streams" said Tim Takeuchi, gaming campaign manager for Intel.
