Hollywood Hosting $1 Million Casual Games World Championship

by Rainier on Sept. 6, 2006 @ 4:16 a.m. PDT

FUN Technologies will host the inaugural casual games competition WorldWide Web Games (W3Games) Saturday Sept. 9. Set to air on the Game Show Network December 2, the W3Games will bring casual game players from across the world to Hollywood for a chance to turn hours of game play into one huge $1 million paycheck.

Seventy-five of the world’s top casual gamers will gather in the heart of Hollywood for the first-ever W3Games. One talented finalist will walk away with the title of “World’s Best Casual Gamer” and a $1 million grand prize.

Here’s a quick glance at the competition:

  • W3Games finalists span the age gamut, from 20 year-old college students to 62 year-old retirees.
  • Finalists hold career paths that cross the spectrum, from project engineers to stay-at-home moms.
  • Finalists come from all over the world, including 22 U.S. states and six countries.
  • Each finalist enjoys playing for unique reasons - for some it’s the relaxation factor, for others it’s the momentary escape from their daily grind that keeps them coming back for more.
  • Finalists qualified for the W3Games championship by gaining top rankings at any one of three popular casual games: Bejeweled 2, Zuma or Solitaire.

FUN Games is not only the leader in skill-based online tournament game play, it hopes to become the first company to combine the largest interactive casual games community on the Web with the power of an international media company and cold, hard cash to harness the full potential of the casual games explosion.

In a casual games industry that’s been widely estimated to reach $1 billion in value by 2008 and grow to more than 124 million gamers that same year (IDC, 2006) FUN Games hosts nearly half of all casual games activity on the net (Jupiter Research, 2006). With 27 million registered users (according to comScore) between its sites www.skilljam.com and www.worldwinner.com, FUN has differentiated itself from other casual games companies by offering consumers a way to play popular casual games online for cash – legally.
