'The Far Wilds' Announced

by Rainier on Oct. 29, 2008 @ 9:44 a.m. PDT

The Far Wilds is an online strategy game in a fantasy setting that combines elements of collectible card games, real-time strategy and massively multiplayer online games.

The Far Wilds is a card-based strategy game where each player brings an army of pre-selected cards to battle. Battle is divided into rounds where each player takes turns moving units and playing cards until they run out of moves, at which point a new round begins. Players battle for control of Flux Wells which produce Flux, the resource used to deploy creatures and cast spells. The person that controls the most Flux Wells at the end of each round gains 2 Glory. The object of the game is to be the first player to reach 20 Glory.

Ages have gone by since the ancient evil was sealed behind the rift. The civilized world has since been isolated behind a great wall of defense. Now a few brave souls have ventured out into the wilds to build their kingdoms and carve out new realms in the wilderness beyond the wall.

You are one of these brave souls, a warlord in the outskirts of the known world struggling to establish a kingdom in the wild lands. You must use strategy and wits to establish yourself and not be pushed back further into the wilderness. Failure results in your death and the death of your army, and success cannot be measured in mortal terms.

"The Far Wilds represents the culmination of our favorite elements from a variety of genres of games into a unique multiplayer experience," said Jed McCaleb, lead designer of The Far Wilds, "While redefining the conventions of typical strategy games, we sought to engross players in a fun and intriguing universe that didn’t require a tremendous time commitment and still offered a refined gaming experience to play competitively or at leisure with friends."

Unlike traditional real-time strategy games, The Far Wilds emphasizes strategy and clever plays rather than fast clicking. The battlefield is randomly generated so each game is very different. Players must constantly be adapting to the changing game conditions. In addition to this higher level of strategy the configurable armies gives The Far Wilds unique, interesting and addictive gameplay.

Contestants in The Far Wilds Grand Clash tournament will be required to download The Far Wilds beta client, or access the Flash version of the game. There will be several preliminary tournaments leading up to the Grand Clash taking place in late Novemeber. The Grand Clash will be a large double elimination tournament with players using their own handcrafted armies. First place will receive $1000 in cash and 2nd through 6th place will receive various amounts of in game gold.

To kick off the official beta of the game, the studio is hosting a tournament with a $1,000 cash prize for first place.
