Central Brittania, 62 A.D.

There are two armies facing each other in the cold damp woods of Brittania. Ten thousand Romans under Gaius Suetonis try to stand their ground against the Iceni tribe led by the warrior-queen Boudica. Boudica, who, driven by her desperate will to avenge all the wrongs done to her people and her own family, had already pillaged and left burning behind her several Roman settlements including Londinium – to be the future city of London.

The Iceni outnumber the Romans nearly ten to one. More importantly, though, Boudica, blinded by her fury, has sold her soul to a demon to help her in the battle to come. There is no doubt about the outcome of the battle that is about to begin.

But demons are not to be trusted. Not only does it not help Boudica, but it turns against her and her people. The Iceni are decimated and Boudica, driven to very edge of sanity by what she has done flees somewhere north never to be heard of again.

London, 1353 A.D.

A ship sails out with a most unusual cargo. Heading to a distant and mysterious island it carries thirteen exiles. They are not supposed ever to return.

They are all different but there's one thing they all have in common. They have become a thorn in the side of the Church. Some of them are suspected to wield strange and magical powers. No one however dares to execute them – the fear of being somehow tainted or cursed by their deaths is too strong. Others are just mixing their interests of the Church with other interests and are too popular or come from noble houses so they can not simply be killed.

One of these exiles is Nicolas Farepoynt, Haresh al-Dorem - „One who speaks with the Dead“. A hunter of mass murderers and arsonists, whose unorthodox and heretical ways of solving crimes have, even in spite of numerous successes and lives saved, resulted in a one-way ticket to the island.
