Good Old Games Adds 'Myst' Series

by Rainier on Dec. 3, 2009 @ 7:20 a.m. PST

GOG.com has signed a digital distribution agreement with Cyan Worlds, expanding its catalogue with one of the best-selling PC-gaming series of all time -- Myst, with the first installment, Myst Masterpiece Edition, now available at GOG.com for only $5.99, DRM-free and XP & Vista compatible.

GOG.com has secured another deal to revive acclaimed titles from PC-gaming history. The agreement with development studio, Cyan Worlds, will bring acclaimed titles from the Myst series to the GOG.com catalogue. With this announcement, the site’s collection of Good Old Games grows even bigger with the additions of Myst Masterpiece; Riven, the sequel to Myst; and Manhole – all DRM-free and $5.99 each.

Myst is a first-person graphic adventure game praised by gamers and by critics for its engaging story, incredible atmosphere and a general experience that resembles a work of art as much as a video game. All those aspects made the game a best-selling PC title throughout the 1990s. The player is put in the role of a stranger who gets magically transported to a mysterious island described in a book. To complete the game, the player must explore the seemingly deserted Myst Island and solve a wide range of challenging puzzles. Most fans of the series would agree with GamePro's assessment – “Don't Myst out.”

"Keeping the Myst series alive is incredibly satisfying," said Rand Miller, co-founder of Cyan. "GOG.com allows us to keep the ages of Myst accessible for our fans, and in addition make them available to a whole new generation of gamers."

“GOG.com was created to bring back such games as the Myst series,” said Adam Oldakowski, Managing Director of GOG.com. “If you call yourself a PC gamer you’ve surely heard about those games, and now, thanks to Cyan Worlds and GOG.com everyone can revisit those true classics.”

The first part of the series, Myst Masterpiece, is already available for only $5.99, while Riven and Manhole will be available soon for the same price.
