Greater self-determination is now yours! Set your own goals of conquest or cultural assimilation as you take control of the great powers of the era, in the race for world domination. Conquer and subjugate your enemies, or dominate the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and rise to become the greatest trading power there has ever been. Mobilise large armies to ward off the barbarian hordes or stave off the threat of invasion from powerful neighbours with gifts and tribute. Always ensure that the favour of the gods are with you by calling on religious omens to guide your hand, all the while currying the favour of the people, by arranging lavish sacrifices to appease those same gods.

With new features previously only available through the digital download only expansion pack, the road to success is much more difficult to traverse. Now Governments hold sway over the actions that can be taken. Senates and tribal council's will order players to conduct Missions they see fit to test players abilities to achieve their goals. Players can also gear their nations to their ultimate goals with the enactment of beneficial Laws. While AI controlled opponents behave with more vigour and purpose, as they set about surviving the turmoil of these times.

Enhanced intrigue options allow players to plot and scheme further, as character now belong to particular factions that hold sway over the seat of power. Characters become a law unto themselves, with their own agendas and demands. Those that support your ambitions can be placated with awards, tribute and positions of power. While those that prove to be an obstacle to your plans, can be imprisoned, banished or executed.
