$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest Phase 3 Winners

by Rainier on Aug. 4, 2009 @ 5:09 p.m. PDT

Epic Games announced the winners of the third phase in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, a competition that rewards aspiring game developers for making exceptional game modifications (mods) for Unreal Tournament 3.

In the all-new $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, aspiring game developers create modifications ("mods") for the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 in a range of categories including levels, characters, weapons, game types, tools, vehicles and more. Winnings exceed well over $1 million in value, consisting of one coveted Unreal Engine 3 license as a grand prize in addition to other cash awards and prizes. The 2008 "$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest" will be judged in four preliminary phases and a grand final. Judging began in June 2008 and will conclude, with the grand final prizes being awarded, in late 2009.

"The Phase 3 entries in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest demonstrate tremendous innovation and creativity," said Elliot Garbus, vice president Intel Software and Services Group, general manager Visual Computing Software Division. "Through Intel's Visual Adrenaline developer program, we continue to encourage software innovation in PC gaming by sponsoring contests such as this, as well as delivering the parallel programming tools and resources developers need to get the most out of Intel processors and platforms."

A special selection of original mods created for the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest are being showcased in Intel's theater at SIGGRAPH 2009 this week in New Orleans.

Lenovo is the exclusive hardware sponsor for Phase 3 of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest. In addition to cash prizes awarded by Intel and Epic, Lenovo is providing HD monitors and high-performance workstations featuring Intel Core2 Extreme and Intel Xeon 5500 series processors and monitors to mod creators winning top honors in select categories. Each winner of a Lenovo workstation will also receive a license for Intel Parallel Studio, the end-to-end product suite for parallelism.

"Like Unreal Engine 3, Lenovo ThinkStation and ThinkPad W-Series workstations are about unleashing the creative potential in our users," said Tom Tobul, executive director, Enterprise Systems, Software and Peripherals, Lenovo. "ThinkStations are the hardware of choice for game development at Epic Games, and now contest winners will have the same performance tools to create content like the pros."

"We're amazed by the high quality and variety of the latest round of UT3 mods," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, Inc. "The bar for gameplay and visuals is raised with each phase of the contest, and it's apparent that the Unreal mod teams have spent a tremendous amount of time honing their projects. There's everything from puzzle games to platformers to machinima, and we can't thank these talented developers enough for their hard work."
