by Rainier on Feb. 26, 2010 @ 9:28 a.m. PST

Space Ark is a fun homage to the bright and bouncy arcade games of the late 80s such as Rainbow Island and Arkanoid, with an added mix of Pinball.

Films franchises like Batman and Star Trek have undergone the reboot process and rumours abound that the Tomb Raider game franchise is due for a reboot to. Now Strawdog Studios are rebooting an entire genre... the classic 80s arcade game, with their latest title Space Ark for Xbox 360 Live Arcade. If arcade games such as Rainbow Island, Bubble Bobble and Arkanoid were being invented for the first time today, what would they be like? Obviously they would run on modern hardware, have High Definition 3D graphics and 5.1 surround sound but the core of what made those games great would remain.

Space Ark is a fun arcade game featuring cute characters (the Arkonauts), wacky bonuses and fruit (every good arcade game must have fruit) plus bonus levels, more fruit, power-ups, extra lives and yet more fruit. Players must help the Arkonauts repair damaged planets by bouncing them into the air and bagging the DNA combos, power-ups and all the fruit you can catch in order to repair planets that have been damaged by a wandering black hole.

Picture the scene: you’re an elite Arkonaut, a space travelling animal that’s just landed on a barren planet in need of terraforming. So, what on earth is terraforming and where do you begin?

In “Space Ark", terraforming is turning a barren planet into an oasis of life and it’s achieved by mastering three steps:

  1. Collect Combos - Bounce and steer your Arkonaut to collect combos made up of chains of three or more DNA blocks of the same colour.
  2. Reach Combo Target - Hold on tight to the DNA chains to reach the Combo Target and rack up those high scores.
  3. Exit! – Spin out of the exit and sprinkle DNA across the planet’s surface to bring it back to life.

But of course, that’s not all there is to it! “Space Ark” has six thrilling stages on each of its 28 missions. While the early missions are straightforward enough, things get trickier later as players are helped and hindered by obstacles and collectables such as fans, switches, teleports and power-ups. Arkonauts, get ready to embark on your missions!

The game features:

  • Single or Multi-player (split screen)
  • 180 levels of cuddly ‘Arkonaut’ bouncing entertainment (split across 5 worlds)
  • 5 fun mini games to unlock
  • 24 selectable cute Arkonauts to play with
  • Bounteous Bonus levels to discover
  • A pile of fruity power-ups big enough to make a jumbo fruit salad.
  • Secre… woops almost
