Magicka is an action/adventure in which the player takes on the role of a wizard of a decadent ancient order, utilizing a complex game mechanic to let players, in real-time, dynamically combine different elements to create spells or the even more powerful Magicks to exploit the weaknesses of their foes.

Magicka is an action/adventure game currently under development by Arrowhead Game Studios. The concept of Magicka first came to life in 2008 as a submission to the Swedish Game Awards, Sweden's largest game development competition. The game was first visualized in 2D but has since been remade in 3D and uses much more advanced technology.

In Magicka, the player takes on the role of a wizard of a decadent ancient order, utilizing a complex game mechanic to let players, in real-time, dynamically combine different elements to create spells or the even more powerful Magicks to exploit the weaknesses of their foes. The game will feature 15 different levels in 9 different environments, giving the players a huge replayability with unlockable magicks, weapons and challenge levels not found the first time around.

All game modes will be available with up to 4 player co-op.

Paradox Interactive and Arrowhead Studios have heard the rallying cry from Magicka veterans everywhere: Players want the chance to be killed by endless hordes of monsters, and not just by their comrades. That chance has finally arrived, with a pair of new, Challenge Maps soon available for download and play in Magicka, the Game Which Punishes Typos with Swift Explosive Death. These maps will be released on April 26th, one of which will be offered without requiring so much as a single potato.

Players will soon be able to punish themselves by attempting the Caverns and Marshlands maps, each featuring a different swarm of terrible creatures with an appetite for your face. Wizards can try to survive the Caverns, inhabited by more trolls than this website, or try something refreshing and new in the Marshlands: Zombies, the monster that fills a completely untapped niche.

Marshlands

Left for dead, your party is faced with the terrible hordes of the undead and some of their friends. This challenge contains a large area for the players to move around and plenty of room for the hordes to really spread out and surround you. If you like splashing around in murky waters trying to dismember zombies, this is the challenge for you.

  • Two completely new challenges with 20 waves each.
  • New spawn situations such as goblin troops arriving via elevator or zombies crawling up through the ground, all around you.
  • Completely new challenge environment
  • 20 deadly waves of enemies unseen in challenges
  • "It came from the swamp" entry point for enemies.

Caverns

In this deep and greedily dug cavern the wizards will face off new waves of evil creatures. Dealing not only with angry dwarves and heavily armed goblins, the wizards need to be vary of the depths that may or may not be horrendously dangerous to their health.

Features

  • Completely new challenge environment
  • "The Elevator from Hell" entry point for enemies.
  • 20 deadly waves of enemies unseen in challenges
  • Fancy new elevator music.

While both maps are difficult and dangerous enough that adding them to one’s Magicka game is the demented act of a madman, one of these maps will be offered entirely free of charge, while the other one will cost a comparatively astronomical 1.99 USD. Choosing which map will be free is an agonizing decision though, which we didn’t feel like making, so instead we’re opting to conduct an extremely scientific poll via Facebook to let Magicka fans ultimately decide. This poll will run for only 24 hours, allowing it to fit within our very short attention spans. Look, a squirrel! Wait, what did we just say?

Players can choose which map they are too cheap to pay for by visiting this FaceBook poll.

Key Features:

  • Innovative and dynamic spellcasting system with over a million possible combinations
  • Up to four-player co-op in all game modes, as well as a single-player option
  • Fight your way through 13 different levels in the campaign
  • Explore an expansive realm of adventure to defeat the evilest of wizards
  • Experience the parody and satire of a clichéd fantasy world
