'SpeedRunners' Free to Play On Steam This Weekend

by Rainier on Oct. 1, 2015 @ 12:10 p.m. PDT

SpeedRunners is a multiplayer running game. Multiple heroes compete with each other, probably because there are too many heroes and not enough crimes. It has a very competitive vibe with a constant cut-throat feeling.

SpeedRunners is a 4 player competitive platformer with grappling hooks, power-ups, and interactive environments. Run, jump, swing around, fire rockets, grapple onto people to knock them off screen. All action takes place on a single screen, and the goal is to run off of it. Use weapons and power-ups to slow down your enemies.

A city filled with superheroes. Lots of them. Heroes that compete to get to crime scenes first. Unfortunately they get carried away just competing with each other. Competing to be the fastest, competing to win, and to run. Run really fast.

Welcome to SpeedRunners.

tinyBuild and DoubleDutch Games' platform-racing game SpeedRunners just went free on Steam as part of a Steam free weekend promotion, meaning you can now go nuts on the game for the next 72 hours for zero pounds/dollars/euros/magic beans.

Now here's the thing: Since SpeedRunners launched on Steam Early Access in 2013, the game has changed significantly. Even just in the last four months, all these things have happened:

  • We added tons of new characters
  • We added a bunch of new maps
  • There were big changes made to previous maps
  • Alley is now called Metro, and it doesn't look like shit anymore!
  • We made big changes to how weapons work
  • There's a whole levelling system with XP progression in there now
  • There's an autokick for AFK players
  • There's a replay system that allows you to record/upload your runs
  • There are handicapped characters to slow the pro players down
  • There's a new soundtrack, finally!
  • There are weekly King of Speed tournaments
  • A shitload of other stuff but we're getting bored of this list now

What we're trying to say is, if you've played SpeedRunners before but haven't been back to it in a while, you really should -- it feels like a brand new game now. And if you haven't played SpeedRunners before, what the hell is wrong with you? It's free right now, so go give it a play, you proper dunce.

Features:

  • 4 Player Competitive Platforming
  • Local and Online Multiplayer
  • You can play in any combination - 4 people online, 2 sitting on a couch playing vs people online, whatever!
  • Best played with an Xbox 360 Controller
  • Goal is to run off-screen, leaving your enemies behind
  • Everyone sees same thing, so the person in front has a disadvantage of not seeing what's coming ahead
