'Super Axe Boy' Seeks Crowd Funding - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Oct. 23, 2015 @ 8:11 a.m. PDT

Super Axe Boy is a platform game that combines 2D and 3D gameplay, memorable characters and a unique graphical aesthetic.

Super Axe Boy aims to deliver an "axe-citing" platform game experience that switches back and forth between 2D gameplay, as known from the classic games of 8-bit era, and slick 3D gameplay situations and graphics from the modern gaming generation. A mix of chiptunes and a garage rock soundtrack will accompany the game’s unique visuals.

You are Axe Boy. You have so far lived a humble and normal life as a lumberjack, until one day, Earth is invaded by the Beaverians - a very sneaky alien beaver race.

The Beaverians' ultimate goal is to build an intergalactic burger franchise, thus they steal all humans from Earth to work as slaves and/or be processed as meat for their products and they pluck all the trees from the planet to provide for the wood material needed to achieve these plans (clearly, this game will feature tons of references to movies and pop culture in general).

Due to random luck, you and your sidekick Bebob are the only ones that have not been abducted. Equipped with your axe and jumping boots starts a journey, that will lead you through many worlds and insane boss fights, in order to stop the alien menace.

Stretch goals are extra targets in case the Super Axe Boy Kickstarter overshoots its initial funding goal of 25.000 EUR. The initial funding target of Super Axe Boy caters to finish and release the game on computer platforms (Mac, PC, Linux).

In the lucky case, that this initial funding goal is overshot, Super Axe Boy will be substantially expanded in scope and will be released on video game consoles too.

  • For a goal of 30.000 EUR the game will get a chunky upgrade with achievements, online leaderboards and international translations (all in-game texts).
  • At 35.000 EUR the game will have more levels and content (by adding a new world environment into the storyline) and remaining funding will be used for potential graphical improvements.
  • Starting from 40'000 EUR, the game will be published for PS4 as well. The feasibility of a PS VITA version will be checked as well, but cannot be promised at this point.
  • At 45.000 EUR, start a new game + with a remixed version of the game, giving you a fresh and more challenging version of the game.
  • Starting from 50.000 EUR, the game will receive a port for XBox One.
  • At 55.000 EUR, the game will receive a substantial upgrade of small bonus and challenge levels, where a set of mini tasks needs to be accomplished in a given time limit.
  • The "final frontier" of stretch goals, 60.000 EUR, will be an own version for Nintendo Wii U.

Levels will switch back and forth between 2D sections (emphasis on: precision, timing, fast movement, countdown sections) and 3D sections (emphasis on: sense of freedom / branching-off level paths, exploration, puzzle solving, cinematic sequences). You will get the frantic feeling of a classical Mario or Mega Man with the sense of exploration and cinematic sequences as known from modern platformers and adventure games. The game will jump between these 2 styles - in the same level and all the time.

There will be large main levels (needing several minutes for completion) and short intersections and bonus levels, where you need to survive one screen or a certain gameplay mechanic is trained with you. Also, your character will get power-ups over time, thus ramping up the movement abilities and ways you can finish a level.

Axe Boy and Bebob are slackers and movie addicts and would rather spend their time doing nothing than rescuing the world. In the game, they will constantly reference movies and rant about inconsistencies in the storyline.

Key Features:

  • 2D+3D: The game is switching back and forth between 2D and 3D gameplay to create a unique best-of-both-worlds platform experience
  • The final game will have a soundtrack that combines the best of an 80s chiptunes sound with pumping garage rock tunes. Anyone who's seen "Scott Pilgrim" should know what that means.
  • The game features a unique low-poly graphical style combined with ultra-realistic lighting and a cinematic camera system. It's an reimagination of retro graphics for the current gaming generation.
  • Levels won't just exist for their own sake, but be integrated in this "beaver alien invasion" storyline, that will bring our heroes around the world and "justify" different environments and gameplay situations.
