'Dirty Bomb' Open Beta Adds New Mercs, Maps and Modes

by Rainier on Oct. 26, 2015 @ 12:19 p.m. PDT

Dirty Bomb is an Unreal Engine 3-powered free-to-play competitive/multiplayer shooter set in 2020 London during the aftermath of a mysterious disaster.

Dirty Bomb is a team-based game in which players will select from a diverse group of mercenaries, each with their own very different personalities, talents and weapons, to create specialized squads to take into the fray on a quest for riches and bragging rights.

It is 2020 and the once great city of London stands abandoned after a mysterious disaster, a dilapidated shell of its former self. After the initial evacuation, the International Crisis and Disaster Agency stepped in to clean up the mess and decontaminate the city. They failed… badly.

Now the streets of London are the playground of Private Military Companies (PMCs) who battle to control the city’s abandoned riches. After all, what’s a little radiation sickness when there’s money to be made?

Say goodbye to London, say hello to the Merc Capital of the World. Say hello to Dirty Bomb.

The Containment War update (coming Wednesday, Oct. 28) provides a wealth of new content for players, including a Molotov-wielding Mercenary equipped to resupply allies with a deployable ammo station, the all-new Execution mode and maps and the eagerly anticipated Dome map for Objective and Stopwatch, as well as limited-edition Containment War Loadout Cards to be collected and an updated profile page to show off your stats. As an added bonus, players who get in on the Dirty Bomb action between Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Wednesday, Nov. 4 will permanently unlock recently released medic Phoenix for free.

Execution Mode is introduced in the Containment War update and features two new maps, Overground and Market. In this single-life mode, players battle it out over twelve rounds with the objective of eliminating the enemy team or destroying a section of the massive ‘Containment Shield’ by planting a bomb.

The new content also includes the colossal Dome map for Objective and Stopwatch mode, and the addition of an all new Mercenary, Stoker, giving Dirty Bomb players the choice from among 17 Mercs to build out their squad. Some of the most recently added Mercs include:

  • Stoker: A disruptive force on the battleground, Stoker can close down chokepoints with Molotov grenades and resupply allies with a deployable ammo station.
  • Phoenix: An offensive-minded healer with self-revival and healing abilities enabled by nanite technology.
  • Phantom: A terrifying Recon Merc with a refractive armor suit that allows him to turn invisible in battle and close in for the kill with his Katana.
  • Red Eye: A medium range marksman who tactically uses smoke grenades and his infrared goggles to spot enemies on the field.
  • Sparks: A not-so traditional healer who comes equipped with a gun that can revive teammates and cause enemy damage from a distance.

Additionally, this update brings limited-edition event Loadout Cards, which provide Containment War character and weapon skins. The event cards are available for the 30 days following the release of the update, and can be obtained in three ways: CW Equipment Cases give a 0.3% chance of scoring a Containment War Loadout Card, CW Elite Cases have a 10% chance, or purchase a bundle of 10 Elite Cases for a bonus CW Event Case that guarantees a Containment War Loadout Card.

While the Containment War Update is the biggest since the Dirty Bomb Open Beta began, new features and gameplay improvements have continually been added this year based on feedback from the community, including load-out card purchasing up to Bronze with in-game currency, matchmaking improvements and private matches, surrender & restart functionality, a report-a-player feature, a new anti-cheat system and more.

"The love, the swearing, the passion, the rage... Dirty Bomb's Open Beta phase has been emotional. But it's this emotion from our players that tells us the fight for improvement is worth it, and why this is our biggest update yet," said Neil Alphonso, lead designer on Dirty Bomb. "We're grateful to everyone telling us what they love or what they’d like to see improved so far. In an expanding universe of team-based shooters, we’re committed to giving hardcore PC players something a bit different for years to come.”

Key Features

  • Competitive To The Core – A return to the classic FPS PC feel with frenetic run ‘n gun action and asymmetrical team-play, Dirty Bomb is built for gamers with a mouse, a keyboard and an appetite for heated competition. Casual players need not apply.
  • Your Mercs, Your Style – Choose from a wide array of larger-than-life Mercenaries. Need heavy fire-power? Pick Rhino, the mini-gun toting foul-mouthed bruiser with the firepower to match. Prefer the fleet feet of a mine dropping Merc? Proxy’s your girl. Each Merc has a variety of unique abilities and load-outs to strategically combat each game challenge and situation. So select your favourite three, form a squad, and get ready to Play Dirty!
  • There’s no “I” in Team – Although each Merc has their individual strengths, they really come into their own when working as part of a team to pull off the perfect play and clear an objective. Success in Dirty Bomb relies on working together to show your opponents the real meaning of hostile negotiations.
  • A Mercenary's Playground – Compete for riches and bragging rights in 5v5 or 8v8 multiplayer action across the game’s initial modes:
    • Objective – Complete team objectives such as escorting a moving vehicle while your opponent defends
    • Stop-Watch – It’s about teamwork and strategy in this race against time. Players take turns attacking and defending objectives while the clock counts down
  • Free-to-Win – Totally free to play and, more importantly, free to win, Dirty Bomb provides hundreds of hours of competitive multiplayer action. It’s all about playing well as a team and mastering your Mercs and their abilities, not the amount of money spent.
