'Orphan' Adds PS4 As Kickstarter Stretch Goal

by Rainier on Feb. 3, 2015 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Orphan is a 2D action platformer that depicts an abandoned young boy fighting for survival during an overnight alien invasion, set to the backdrops of collapsing rural industries and fiery apocalyptic sermons.

Orphan is a young boy and presumably the sole survivor of an overnight alien invasion.

You will sneak across the countryside through open fields and dense forests, over dangerous mountains and through lush valleys, ducking behind rocks and trees all while being pursued by an army of machines designed to destroy all life. However the machines have their weaknesses and they carry powerful weapons that may be able to be used against them.

Orphan draws inspiration from the classic 2D games of gaming's golden era. Orphan focuses on immersive gameplay, visuals and atmosphere and channels classics like Another World, Blackthorne and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey, with a touch of Journey to Silius.

Orphan’s gameplay is based on stealth as the main character is a mostly defenseless 8 year old boy, but through acquiring caches of military and alien weapons the game will transition to an action oriented platformer pitting the boy against the invading forces. Visually, Orphan is a blend of Appalachian photos and silhouette graphics, designed to run at a full 1080p.

Windy Hill Studio has launched a kickstarter campaign, looking for a modest $32,000, to complete the development of Orphan.

Orphan launched its campaign on Kickstarter last week and has reached just under 15 percent of its $32,000 goal. Developer Windy Hill Studio hopes adding PS4 support, as well as additional backer tiers, will give the campaign a much-needed boost.

“With Kickstarter support waning in the gaming community I set small goals with small tiers and tried to run a conservative campaign,” said studio owner Brandon Goins. “Supporters are saying Orphan needed to go bigger, all the while I’m constantly asked by console gamers if Orphan is coming to PS4. I’m listening, and hoping these changes can help get the campaign back on track.”

Orphan takes place in rolling hills and rugged mountains of Appalachia, a land not too often visited in video games.  In addition to country fields, mountains, caves and rivers this setting opens up unique environments such as railways, coal mines as well as structures and machinery just as scary and alien as the game's other-world antagonists.

Orphan is a classically-styled 2D action platformer with an emphasis on stealth, item discovery and strategic combat. As the game progresses, the player will become more powerful and gameplay will become more action oriented.
