'StarCraft II' Nova Covert Ops Pack 3 This Month, New Co-op Content, Multiplayer Changes

by Rainier on Nov. 4, 2016 @ 3:11 p.m. PDT

Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard's signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game.

Picking up where Heart of the Swarm left off, Legacy of the Void casts you in the role of Hierarch Artanis, leader of the technologically advanced protoss race. Years ago, the protoss homeworld of Aiur fell to the merciless zerg Swarm. Now, you have raised a powerful fleet of warships known as the Golden Armada and are poised to reclaim your world. But an ancient evil threatens your destiny and the fate of the entire Koprulu Sector. The galaxy's only hope is for you to reunite the protoss factions and defeat the coming darkness.

The fates of Terran hero Jim Raynor and Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, also hang in the balance.

In addition to the single-player campaign, Legacy of the Void will feature a host of new features that will make it the ultimate StarCraft multiplayer experience. Two heads are better than one, and Archon Mode applies this maxim to competitive gaming. In this brand-new two-player mode, players merge together to become a greater, unified force by sharing control over a single base. It's the perfect mode for rookies to learn tactics from seasoned veterans—and a fun way to amplify the power of a burgeoning all-star.

Allied Commanders is a new, open-ended game mode with campaign-style objectives that breathes new life into the StarCraft cooperative experience. Here, each player will choose a powerful commander to lead their favorite army into battle and fight in diverse scenarios with dynamic, campaign-style objectives. Players can then level up these commanders to gain access to new units, abilities, and customization options for their armies.

The thrill of competing in a StarCraft II tournament is like no other gaming experience around, and Legacy of the Void makes it easier than ever for everyone to get in on the action. With Automated Tournaments, players from around the world canprove their might in no-holds-barred daily online competitions.Tournaments will be held for players of all skill levels, unlocking the potential for anyone to feel the excitement of surviving through elimination rounds and clawing their way to victory.

War Chest

War Chest is the name of a new series of seasonal content for StarCraft II. Players who take part in the War Chest will be presented with an unlockable star map. As they gain experience points through playing StarCraft II ladder matches or cooperative missions online, players can use those points to open up different pathways through the map, which will unlock fun bits of story and lore, as well as exclusive digital content including unit skins, portraits, decals, and emojis.

Players gain access to each season of the War Chest by paying a nominal fee. Proceeds from each season will go into funding the StarCraft II World Championship Series (WCS).

Co-op updates

Since the feature debuted with the launch of Legacy of the Void, cooperative missions have become a very popular game mode in StarCraft II.

A new commander, Stukov, is based on a popular infested Terran character from both the original StarCraft and StarCraft II campaigns. Stukov’s base will consist of Infested Terran structures that constantly spawn infested units. This will make his gameplay style markedly different from other commanders.

A pair of new cooperative missions will also release soon. Miner Evacuation will task players with escorting civilians off of a dangerous planet. Dark of Night is based off a popular Arcade mission called Left2Die, where countless waves of infested are sent to overwhelm the players.
Another new feature coming soon to cooperative missions will be leaderboards. All cooperative games will be scored, and the best scores will be posted online for other players to try and beat.

Nova Covert Ops

The final three missions to Nova Covert Ops will release on Nov. 22nd, bringing a thrilling conclusion to the downloadable campaign that kicked off earlier this year.

Multiplayer update

A comprehensive set of multiplayer design changes is coming to StarCraft II shortly after BlizzCon. The changes have been in public testing for the last couple of months. Terran changes will allow for more viable mech play with a full overhaul of the Cyclone and Siege Tank, with the latter being given a big damage buff in exchange for the removal of its ability to be picked up and dropped off by Medivacs while in siege mode. Zerg changes include a range and speed buff for the Hydralisk as well as a Baneling health buff. Protoss adjustments include a new ability for the Tempest, which serves as a tool for zoning and area denial, a speed increase for Zealots, and blink for Dark Templar.

The changes are intended not just to shake up the metagame for competitive StarCraft II—the hope is to increase overall strategic diversity and bring the game to a state where the meta can evolve in a healthy way on its own.

Multiplayer battles in Legacy of the Void will be fought with an array of new units, as well as upgrades to veteran forces. Zerg swarms will welcome the return of the Lurker, a classic creature from the original StarCraft that lays waste to infantry with deadly spines that burst from the ground. The Protoss field a new weapon called the Disruptor, which can use massive energy spikes to wreak havoc through swaths of ground forces. And the Terrans have engineered some new technology, such as Tactical Jump, which allows their Battlecruisers to teleport to any location on the battlefield.

Legacy of the Void will include functionality that enhances online multiplayer play with automated tournaments, providing players with ongoing events that support the active StarCraft II community.

Legacy of the Void introduces new ways to enjoy StarCraft II's unrivaled real-time strategy gameplay. In Archon Mode, two players share control over a single base and units as they take on an enemy duo in multiplayer action. By sharing the responsibility of commanding troops and managing resources, players can focus on their own areas of the battle, execute more intricate strategies, and benefit from each other's unique expertise.

Legacy of the Void also adds Co-op Missions that provide players with a whole new way to enjoy the game with a friend. In this objective-based experience, players team up and take on the roles of powerful allied commanders from the StarCraft saga. Each commander brings unique abilities to the table, including specialized upgrades and army bonuses. Players will join forces to battle through a series of challenging scenarios together, leveling up their commanders' capabilities as they progress.

An array of new units will breathe new life into the online multiplayer battles that represent the core StarCraft II competitive experience. Zerg swarms will welcome the return of the Lurker, a classic creature from StarCraft: Brood War that lays waste to infantry with deadly spines which burst from the ground. The Protoss field a new weapon called the Disruptor, which can use massive energy spikes to wreak havoc through swaths of ground forces. And the Terrans have focused on establishing air superiority with the Liberator, a versatile, heavily armed gunship with twin missile launchers and the ability to transform into a stationary air platform, much like its ground-based Siege Tank counterpart. Six units are being added in total—two for each race—with many existing units receiving updates to prepare for the coming battle.

Legacy of the Void will also include enhancements to online multiplayer play in the form of automated tournaments, providing players with exciting ongoing events that support the competitive StarCraft II community.
