'Niten' Gets Standalone VR Edition

by Rainier on April 12, 2016 @ 1:13 a.m. PDT

Niten is a story driven exploration game set on a remote Japanese island, uncover the the history of the island and it's previous inhabitants; a Samurai master and his orphan-child student.

Built using Unreal Engine 4 and with assets created using Speedtree, Niten presents a beautiful, lush landscape. The dynamic weather and diverse lighting makes each playthrough unique and mesmerizing.

Experience a place where ancient Japanese culture meets breathtaking scenery, blossoming cherry trees and a sky that will tell you a story in itself. Watch the weather turn and see the sun go down, feel the chill of the morning mist and let dandelion seeds sweep past you as you are free to discover and uncover the mystery of the island.

Niten is designed to provide an atmospheric and tranquil experience for you as a player and you will be free to roam the island in any way you desire as you search to discover its secrets.

Donald Macdonald has launched a kickstarter campaign, looking for $21,352 (£15,000), to finish up development on Niten.

Today I am proud to announce that Niten has been awarded a developer grant from Unreal-Engine in the form of an HTC VIVE VR kit!

This amazing act of generosity has convinced me to shake things up a little with our stretch goals. The VR stretch goal will now be removed from the campaign and a VR version of Niten will be released as a standalone edition of the game. And here's the best bit;  This will be given free upon completion to everyone who backs the minimum £15 release of Niten on Kickstarter. So just to repeat; you back Niten now, you get the VR version as soon as it drops, for free!

A few notable points:

  • The current version of Niten is still absolutely the main focus and the timeline and release dates will not be affected by the above. Our projects plans and sprints for the next 3 months have no room for VR!
  • The VR version of Niten will be rebuilt from the ground up to maximise it's efficiency and framerates for VR. It will be released as a standalone product, though as mentioned above; it will be given free to all backers of the original Niten Kickstarter campaign as a thank you for supporting us.
  • The release date of the VR version is as yet unconfirmed. As we move closer to the completion of the standard Version we will make decisions regarding this and update you all.

Stretch goals are:

  • Four Seasons - £18,000: Watch the environment and its content change with the seasons.
  • Additional Wildlife - £20,000: In addition to the diverse plant and animal life already present, the environment will include a wider and more intriguing variety of authentic wildlife.
  • Virtual Reality Standalone Version - £25,000: A standalone version for Virtual Reality will entail remaking the game with VR as a primary focus to deliver the most immersive game play experience.

Let fireflies guide you through the night as you walk up the hills of the island. Feel the sand and water on your toes as you wonder along the beach. From the deepest bamboo forest, the open field with its colourful and vibrant flowers to the spine-chilling darkness of the mysterious cave and the serene lake filled with water lilies, the island is yours to explore as you wish.

Take a break from exploring the island to discover your inner Zen-master as you cultivate your lodge and garden with a wide range of alternative decor, foliage and unique collectible items.

With professional voice-acting and an original, studio-engineered score, ‘Niten’ provides a fully immersive audio experience in addition to its polished visuals. The story of the Samurai master and his orphan-child student is told entirely through audio.

At the end of each playthrough of the game you will be able to download the story fragments you have uncovered as pages of a fully illustrated graphic novel.
