'Ghost Theory' (ALL) Switches From Unity3D to CryEngine

by Rainier on Sept. 15, 2016 @ 3:25 p.m. PDT

Ghost Theory is a first-person survival horror, offering an authentic ghost hunting experience and set in real-world haunted locations, developed with native support for VR headsets.

In Ghost Theory, you are a gifted paranormal investigator able to catch glimpses of ghosts, and equipped with all the tools modern science can provide. Using stealth and your wits to survive, you will explore the most famous real-life haunted places to cleanse them of their evil presence, all the while collecting data and evidence to ultimately solve the eternal mystery of the afterlife.

Using a range of ghost hunting gadgets and abilities, you must investigate real world haunted places to reveal the truth behind their haunting, all the while evading the wrath of their resident evils ― or potentially eliminating them.

You will not shoot zombies or aliens, run and hide from murderous psychopaths, or follow a scripted, linear path. Instead, each location will be an open-ended haunted ground, with its own backstory for you to discover. But the more you explore and poke around, the more you risk angering the lingering spirits that roam the place. Rather than physically try to kill you, ghosts will stalk and harass you, becoming more aggressive as you get closer to your objective. Manage your stress and find a way to banish or capture them before they literally scare you to death.

You are free to take shortcuts or take your time to discover optional areas and secrets, gather data in the form of Ectoplasm samples or possessed objects, capture footage of ghost activity, etc.

We’d like to officially announce that we’re transferring the development of Ghost Theory from Unity3D to CryEngine.

In doing so, we were also advised by Crytek to submit our game to their “million-dollar” Indie Dev Fund. And so we did just that – we are now live on the Crytek Fund’s site. Ghost Theory’s next step is to acquire as many likes as possible from our fans so that we truly stand out before Crytek closes the voting.

Therefore, we kindly ask all of our backers, fans and media banner wavers to help us raise the ranks of our voting army; our Ghost Theory page is here. For those without an account at Crytek, registration will be required, but that’s the only hurdle to jump.

Each LIKE (vote) is crucial towards helping us get the additional funds we need to make Ghost Theory the way we, and our fans, want it.

Just like our Kickstarter campaign, we’re hoping for a last big push on the home straight!

Key Features

  • Unique setting: The rich world of paranormal phenomena has never seriously been used in a videogame before, and offers strong narrative themes, a genuine horror atmosphere, and endless gameplay opportunities.
  • Real-world locations and cases: We have secured the rights to use several real haunted places, as well as their associated history, such as 30 East Drive, Pontefract, home to the most violent poltergeist in Europe. By drawing inspiration from the very best horror movies and stories, we hope to captivate players curious about the unknown.
  • RPG gameplay is a main stretch goal - Base Management: When you’re not on a mission, you’re at your base making choices of the course of the research and tool production. As you progress in the game you can expand the base of new premises. You need to watch your budget though because if you fail to deliver results, the university will cut the funding. You also manage a club of ghost hunters that help you to investigate more locations through non-playable missions. If they succeed in their mission they will bring back some resources. To raise their chances you need to spot their individual qualities and send them on the right missions with the right equipment
  • Engaging mission gameplay: Use your Clairvoyance gift to see ghosts and experience visions of past events. Use a variety of ghost hunting tools, such as a UV lamp to reveal hidden traces of ectoplasm, a pendulum to locate buried objects, a camera to record ghostly apparitions, and many more.
  • Open-ended objectives: In non-linear levels, head straight for your target or explore hidden paths and uncover the mystery behind each haunting. Collect evidence in the form of recordings, samples, lesser specters, to fund your research and develop better equipment.
  • Innovative visual presentation: Using actors filmed in stereoscopic 3D and seamlessly integrated into the game’s environments, the game offers unparalleled realism and horrifying shock moments.
  • Advanced VR support: Owners of VR headsets will greatly benefit from the game’s design. The game is developed from the start with VR in mind and every aspect of the game is engineered towards providing the most immersive experience. The user interface, inventory, and overall visual feedback all emerge from the game world itself, ensuring that nothing ever reminds you’re in a videogame.
