'Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap' (ALL) Gets PS4/Switch Retail Editions

by Rainier on Nov. 6, 2017 @ 7:58 a.m. PST

A good curse makes a good game (or so they say)! turned into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, a lonesome adventurer is facing the challenge of a lifetime!

In search for a cure, our mutated anti-hero will explore the many traps of Monster Land... and defeat many stuff-throwing, curse-wielding dragons. How many more transformations can one hopeful body survive, as it turns into a Lizard, a Mouse, a Piranha, a Lion, and a Hawk... The six different forms of our shape-shifting hero make up the cast of this non-stop action-adventure platformer!

Imagine if Zelda, Metroid and Mario had a love child.

“The Wonder Boy saga on the Sega Master System was my personal Zelda when I was a little kid, and being able to give Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap the full physical retail treatment it deserves fills me with great joy.” says Headup Games founder Dieter Schoeller. “We’ve hold the deepest respect for DotEmu and Nicalis, and are proud to collaborate with these two outstanding partners.”

“We’re huge fans of the Wonder Boy series, and we believe that Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap deserves the full physical retail treatment that was given to our own games like The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Cave Story+,” says Nicalis CEO Victor Rodriguez. “We’ve got a deep respect for DotEmu; this is an exciting partnership for us.”

“Thanks to Nicalis’ experience and passion for classic games, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will be available on physical cartridges and discs in retail stores—just like in the old days,” says DotEmu CEO Cyrille Imbert. “This is awesome! A full retail release of Lizardcube’s masterpiece is a great way to reflect the spirit of the game and its history.”

The Switch and PS4 versions of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap are presented in widescreen HD, with enhanced interface functions, a new playable character (Wonder Girl) and the option to toggle between the all-new hand-drawn visuals and the original graphics.

Along with Wonder Boy in his classic form (Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III), you can now play as the totally awesome, totally radical Wonder Girl! Bringing the game to a new, larger audience necessitated sprinkling the classic with many improvements – one of which is a female character who is just as strong, just as fierce as the titular male hero.

The game’s developer, Lizardcube, reverse-engineered the original game in order to faithfully replicate the character movements, item drop logic, secret door locations and much more.
