'Minecraft' (ALL) To Get Real-Money Marketplace This Spring

by Rainier on April 10, 2017 @ 8:17 a.m. PDT

Minecraft is a sandbox building game which allows players to build, construct and craft objects in a cubic world.

Minecraft is a game based on limitless creativity and building in a three dimensional sandbox world.

It´s hard to believe it´s been almost two years since Mojang and Microsoft joined forces on Minecraft.

We’re celebrating a new milestone for Minecraft and its amazing community -  over 106,859,714 copies sold – and sharing a bunch of other interesting factoids too!

A lot has happened since then so to help make sense of it all, we created this handy infographic to show you just how far we’ve come.

Arriving with the 1.1 Discovery Update this Spring, Minecraft Marketplace is a new program that will give players on our Bedrock Engine platforms (mobile and Windows 10 PC) the opportunity to browse, download and play cool community creations from within the game itself. You can discoverall kinds of amazing new content in the Discovery Update.

The idea is to give mobile and Windows 10 players access to a growing catalogue of fun stuff, curated and supplied by us – the Minecraft team – safely and simply, while giving Minecraft creators another way to make a living from the game, allowing them to support themselves in the creation of future projects.

At launch, we’ll have a catalogue of amazing adventure maps, texture packs, mini games and more, created by well-known community creators like BlockWorks, Noxcrew and Qwertyuiop The Pie, among others. We’re getting started with a few existing partners to get the program running, and we’ll be opening up submissions to anyone with a registered business later on down the line!

To make all of this happen, we’re introducing Minecraft Coins, which players can buy using in-app purchases with real currency on their device. We know that Minecraft players often play Minecraft on multiple devices, so we are working toward making content players buy available on multiple devices as well, enabled by a free Xbox Live account.

We'll have a public beta launching on Android in mid-April. This will focus on testing the new Minecraft Coins, so you won’t see any creator content in the beta, but we'll add that when we launch later in Spring.

Check out the highlights:

  • There have been over 100 million copies of Minecraft sold to-date – 106,859,714 to be exact! If each person that bought a copy formed a nation, it would be the 12th most populous in the world, behind Russia, Japan and Mexico.
  • More people are playing Minecraft now than ever before – every month there are an average of 40+ million unique Minecraft players across all platforms.
  • Since the beginning of 2016, Minecraft has averaged over 53,000 copies sold every day. That works out to around four copies sold in the time it took you to read that last sentence.
  • Players of Minecraft come from every country and territory on the planet. There have even been four copies sold to folks in Antarctica.
  • People of all ages and genders enjoy Minecraft across 14 different platforms. The average age is 29 years old and nearly 40% of our players are female.

 Happy crafting!
