'Sonic Mania' (ALL) Unveils Bonus Stages and Time Attack Mode - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Aug. 7, 2017 @ 1:51 a.m. PDT

Sonic Mania brings fans back into the 2D world of platform games with nostalgic pixel-style art and core classic gameplay by reimagining iconic Zones and Acts from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.

You’re not dreaming. Since the 90’s, Sonic has advanced from the 2D world into 3D, and has crossed multiple platforms along the way. But what would have happened if Sonic had continued his 2D glory after Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles? The world is about to find out.

Before you get too lost in nostalgia of the 1990s, the game is also adding completely new Zones with all-new Acts and bosses into the mix.

Sonic Mania is a brand new Sonic the hedgehog title that takes the classic Sonic experience and adds new elements and exciting surprises. Players will be able to choose between playing Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles to defeat bosses and enemies. Harness Sonic’s new Drop Dash, Tails’ flight, and Knuckles’ climbing abilities to overcome evil Dr. Eggman and his henchmen. Discover a myriad of never-before-seen hidden paths and secrets!

In “Blue Spheres”, players navigate Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles through a series of blue spheres to clear the stage. But be careful! Once touched, the blue spheres will turn red. Touching a red sphere instantly ends the Bonus Stage. Silver Medallions are awarded to players who complete the Bonus Stage, while collecting all the blue spheres and rings awards players with a perfect score and a Gold Medallion.

Time Attack was also revealed to be a new mode in Sonic Mania. Prove you’re the best of the best in Time Attack, which lets players compete for fastest speed in the world by recording their time in the game’s online leaderboard.

In Special Stages, players chase down enemy UFOs to secure various Chaos Emeralds. Collecting blue spheres along the way will give their character an added boost of speed to their meter. Once the meter fills up, the Mach level increases. Just watch out and don’t speed off the stage!

This all-new experience celebrates the best of Classic Sonic and features stunning 60 FPS gameplay and pixel-perfect physics.

Fans can pre-order the game digitally now for Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, and PC here. The Sonic Mania standard edition for Nintendo Switch will be available to purchase digitally at launch on August 15. The previously announced Collector’s Edition of Sonic Mania can be pre-ordered here for a limited time.

Sonic Mania will launch on August 15, 2017at $19.99 USD/$25.99 CAD.
