'The Day After: Origins' Developer Goes Bankrupt, Shut Down

by Rainier on March 15, 2018 @ 9:02 a.m. PDT

The Day After: Origins is an open-world action and story-driven game, where the player's decisions influence the storylines.

It takes place in a small North American mining town, kept under full quarantine due to an unknown bacteria who affects the citizens, transforming them into dangerous and contagious beings. You’ll get to play Noah Byers, a nonchalant young man who just saw his whole city being turned into chaos because of the sudden spread of violent bacteria. In this game, you’ll make choices that will impact the course of events. Walk freely through Grayfox Hill and explore every corner of the town. Experience multiple ways to overcome the obstacles and fight the deadly infected citizens.

The Day After story is about nostalgia, determination, friendship, regrets, love and danger. It relates to survivors confronting their own past, struggling between their new life and the unsolved businesses of their old one. Even when the world collapses, some secrets just can’t be put to rest.

One of the most important aspects of The Day After : Origins experience is about making choices. Every decision affects the storylines and the world itself. All the NPCs react and interact with Noah in accordance to the reputation you'll build with your previous choices. Even the landscape might change according to some of your actions.

Montreal-based developer Coconut Games has shut down due to bankruptcy.

The Day After: Origins had been available on Steam Early Access since mid-2017 and received a few updates, but earlier this month, it was removed from Steam without prior warning. At the end of 2017, Coconut Games had launched a failed Kickstarter campaign for The Day After: Origins.

The game's removal from Steam Early Access set off alarm bells, so we reached out to our Coconut Games PR contact, but the emails bounced back with a "user unknown" message. When we did a little more digging, we found that The Day After's website, the company's official website, Facebook page, Twitter account, and Discord channel were all unreachable or had been taken down.

We tracked down one of the studio's producers, Stephane Woods, who had changed his LinkedIn status to, "looking for new opportunities," and received confirmation that "Coconut Games went bankrupt, unfortunately it's over."
