'Jumplight Odyssey' Reveals Combat In Latest Gameplay, Demo Coming During Steam Next Fest - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on June 11, 2023 @ 3:31 p.m. PDT

Jumplight Odyssey is a roguelite colony sim inspired by genre staples and classic 70s sci-fi anime.

Take the helm of a Jumplight Starship as it flees its destroyed homeworld and lead your people to their salvation, the fabled Forever Star. Chart a course forward, jump to mysterious new systems, recruit crew members, and build out the ship’s interior while avoiding space pirate attacks, black holes, and the relentless pursuit of Admiral Voltan and the warmongering Zutopans in a roguelite colony sim inspired by genre staples and classic 70s sci-fi anime.

Keep an eye on the starship’s evergrowing crew from an Incredible Cross Sections-inspired viewpoint, managing their needs to ensure Hope remains high. Observe deep social interactions as quirky crew members interact with their friends, lovers, and rivals on a daily basis. Witness meaningful, emergent moments as relationships develop, tragedies strike, and danger awaits on a starship stacked with stories.

Manage the chaos across multiple decks, which can be outfitted with utilities, luxuries, defenses, and resource production chains. Create corridors to design optimal resource chains and build hot tubs to destress and generate camaraderie among crewmates. Build greenrooms onboard to farm needed supplies, and react to threats as electrical storms strike, fires rage, and hull breaches send a crew member or two into the furthest reaches of space.

Jumplight Odyssey developer League of Geeks dropped a new trailer alongside news of a free playable demo during Steam Next Fest, June 19-26, 2023.

As Princess Euphora leads her people from their destroyed homeworld to the fabled Forever Star, danger follows in her wake. Pursued by Admiral Voltan and the fearsome Zutopans, the Princess and her crew must navigate star systems while avoiding deadly black holes, space pirate ambushes, and Zutopan boarding parties, all while managing the happiness of the colony on board.

Learn more about combat in the above trailer, as members of crew aboard the SDF Catalina face myriad challenges. Bolster the ship's engines, outfit combat units for battle, scramble fighter pilots, and prepare defenses against enemy assaults. Keep hope alive against unrelenting enemies while ensuring colony members stay safe before jumping to a new star system for a moment’s reprieve.

Engage in defensive maneuvers when enemies approach, complete with radar, turret, and starfighter squadron defense. Assign crew members to combat roles as boarding parties advance and trigger on-ship showdowns where the stakes for survival have never been higher. Position combatants to defend against enemies and push back against their assault while protecting the ship’s engines and power supplies, or run the risk of being exterminated by Admiral Voltan.

Combat is just one aspect of Jumplight Odyssey, and the upcoming Steam Next Fest demo (available June 19-26) provides an overview of the highly replayable game loop. Download the demo for free, and start a career as captain of the SDF Catalina. Explore multiple star systems, customize the ship’s decks with dozens of fully placeable objects, and manage a robust crew comprised of characters with detailed relationships, personality traits, and schedules.

Send colony members on away missions and secure valuable resources to keep the Catalina’s oxygen and power systems functioning. Plot out the next leg of your galactic adventure on the Journey Screen while staying one step ahead of the Zutopans.

“Since first revealing Jumplight Odyssey last year, we’ve been hard at work creating a simulation of a living, breathing starship. One that captures the spirit of beloved sci-fi anime with the unpredictability of colony management games,” said Trent Kusters, Co-Founder and Director, League of Geeks. “Our newest trailer highlights the chaos of combat and the lengths players will have to go to keep hope alive, but that’s just a small part of the experience. Soon you’ll be able to see first-hand the promise our starship adventure sim has to offer with Jumplight Odyssey’s upcoming Steam Next Fest demo on June 19!”

Make your escape to the Forever Star by jumping to new systems full of different biomes with unique challenges and resources to harvest.  Assign crew members to away missions to survey for resources, send out resource extraction or salvage missions to restock your supplies, and rescue all manner of surprising survivors! Prepare for encounters with aliens, combat against devious space pirates, and showdowns against the Zutopans pursuing the ship’s course toward the Forever Star.

Each interaction and decision plays into the crew’s ultimate success, but failure isn’t the end. Designed around multiple runs, Jumplight Odyssey encourages captains to learn lessons from previous shortcomings. Retool the ship’s layout, prepare for dramatic moments, and race toward the Forever Star once more. Do whatever it takes to keep Hope alive. Rescue civilians on different star clusters, and make Promises to rally the ship’s population. But be careful, because every broken Promise runs the risk of dwindling Hope and creating a mutinous, broken crew.

Jumplight Odyssey will be available on PC via Steam Early Access in 2023, with English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) language support. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are planned following Early Access.
