'Assassin's Creed Mirage' Partners With Renowned Institutions For In-Game History of Baghdad Feature - Screens

by Rainier on July 5, 2023 @ 10:51 a.m. PDT

Assassin's Creed Mirage goes back to the narrative-driven roots of the series, set 20 years before Assassin's Creed Valhalla featuring a young Basim.

In the ninth century CE, Baghdad is at its height, leading the world in science, art, innovation, and commerce. Amid its bustling urban landscape, a conflicted young orphan with a tragic past must navigate the streets to survive.

Experience the story of Basim in Assassin's Creed Mirage.

A shorter, more narrative-driven game than recent entries in the series, Assassin's Creed Mirage takes place 20 years before the events of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as players meet a 17-year-old Basim struggling with nightmarish visions and living life as a cunning street thief.

Fortunately for Basim, the Hidden Ones (including his mentor Roshan, voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo) see his potential and help him flee Baghdad to the Hidden Ones' fortress of Alamut. As he learns their mysterious rituals and powerful tenets, he will hone his unique abilities, discover his true nature, and come to understand a new Creed - one that will change his fate in ways he never could have imagined.

Built as an homage to the first Assassin's Creed games, Mirage pays tribute to the series' roots, as players join the proto-Assassin order known as the Hidden Ones and grow to become a master assassin. Baghdad in the ninth century was a bustling metropolis, and it serves as the perfect dense, urban hunting ground as Basim stalks his prey using the series' largest assortment of tools to date. While they haven't quite adopted the name "Assassins" at this point in history, make no mistake: The Hidden Ones are a powerful and established order, with resources and the all-important creed to guide them. As Basim explores Baghdad, he'll be able to get contracts and upgrades from a network of Hidden One bureaus throughout the city, collect clues on his targets, and take them down with swift assassinations.

In this pivotal moment of History, players will become Basim Ibn Is’haq, a young thief with a mysterious past who joins the Hidden Ones in Alamut on a quest for answers. Basim will be voiced by two talented actors: Lee Madjoub for the VO and Eyad Nassar for the Arabic version, as Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is the first Assassin’s Creed game to release worldwide with full Arabic localization, including text and voice. They are joining the incredible Mirage cast with Shohreh Aghdashloo, who will voice Roshan, Basim's mentor in the Hidden ones.

Of course, an assassin's greatest advantage comes from their climbing ability, and as the series returns to a large-scale urban environment, Basim will need to leap across rooftops, scale tall towers, and flee guards by parkouring seamlessly through Baghdad's four distinct districts. When information can't be gained by gathering clues, Basim's eagle Enkidu can take to the skies, survey areas, and tag enemies for Basim to stealthily eliminate.

Ubisoft announced partnerships with several renowned institutions to bring to life the “History of Baghdad” feature in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, offering players an interactive way to learn more about the game’s rich setting.

Within the game’s immersive recreation of Baghdad, players can discover a total of sixty-six historical sites, each serving as a portal to valuable insights about the era, divided into five categories: Art & Science; Beliefs and Daily Life; Court Life; Economy; and Government. Each entry has been crafted in collaboration with historians and expert advisors and is illustrated by images carefully selected amongst the collections of eminent museums and institutions worldwide, including The David Collection, the Institut du monde arabe (IMA), The Khalili Collections, and Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design.

The David Collection is an exclusive museum in the heart of Copenhagen with one of the most comprehensive collections of Islamic art in the Western world. Among the objects from The David Collection featured in “History of Baghdad” is the magnificent ivory-carved Casket with gilt-bronze fittings.

For more than thirty years, the Institut du monde arabe in Paris (IMA) has established itself as a cultural bridge between France, the Arab world, and the rest of the world. This architectural vessel acts as an activator of cultures and has thus become an essential landmark for people concerned with the Arab worlds.  One of the objects from IMA featured in Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the exquisite Ruby Lustre Bowl.

Over the course of five decades, Professor Sir Nasser D. Khalili has assembled eight of the world’s finest art collections. Together, the Eight Collections comprise some 35,000 works, many of which have been exhibited at prestigious institutions worldwide. One of these Collections is dedicated to Islamic Art with holdings of more than 28,000 objects. Among the objects from The Khalili Collections featured in the game is their fascinating Planispheric Astrolabe.

Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design is the Honolulu-based center of the Doris Duke Foundation. Built by Doris Duke in 1937 as a home, today Shangri La is a place that enriches public understanding of Islamic art and cultures, champions artists through residency programs, and serves as a place for personal and societal transformation. One of the objects from Shangri La featured in “History of Baghdad” is the astonishing Blown Glass Jar with Trailed Zigzag Decoration.

“Assassin’s Creed always strives to be a gateway for players to discover more about the fascinating historical setting and eras it explores.” says Thierry Noël, Head of Ubisoft’s Humanities & Inspiration Department. “With information curated by experts, “History of Baghdad” offers a research-based perspective over 9th century Baghdad and the Abbasid Empire, tackling pre-conceptions and clichés often associated with them. Our collaboration with esteemed partners and experts to bring this feature to life in Assassin's Creed Mirage further highlights the commitment to authenticity and accuracy that is a hallmark of the series.”

The contributions of advisors; Dr Glaire Anderson, expert in Islamic art, and the Digital Lab for Islamic Visual Culture & Collections of the University of Edinburgh; Dr Vanessa Van Renterghem, specialist of medieval Baghdad; Dr Ali Olomi, Scholar of Islamic History; and Dr Raphaël Weyland, expert of Islamic history who joined Ubisoft for the game’s creation; were critical for the recreation of Baghdad in Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the “History of Baghdad” feature.
