As WP's senior editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. 9. 'The Last Guardian' (PS3)

by Judy on Jan. 25, 2012 @ 12:30 a.m. PST

Ever since it's first appearance in 2005, Fumito Ueda's Team ICO, known for ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, are working on a new PS3 exclusive, but details as to story, gameplay mechanics are still unknown.

Dustin Chadwell: I can accredit Team Ico's previous game, Shadow of the Colossus, with being the title that helped reinvigorate my love for video games. As a result, I'm definitely looking forward to The Last Guardian, despite any of the bad news and rumors that have surrounded it lately. The little footage we've seen has looked absolutely beautiful, and I still have high hopes that this game will maintain the quality found in both Ico and Colossus. Here's hoping it actually makes its 2012 date because I'm absolutely frothing in anticipation for this game.

Brad Hilderbrand: I'm a bit reluctant to put The Last Guardian on a most anticipated list for 2012 because it's been on my list pretty much every year since it was announced, but it never seems like it's going to actually come out. Still, I'm hopeful this will be the year that the boy and his giant griffincatbird finally make their debut. The dynamic between the boy and his companion looks to be more complex than most relationships in games, with trust developing over time and gameplay changing as the critter bonds with his new human friend. Team Ico has demonstrated a flair for turning offbeat topics into incredible games in the past, so I see no reason to bet against them this time around. Let's just hope I'm not right back here in 2013 talking about how I'm still excited for this title's launch.

Sanford May: This may be blasphemous for serious PlayStation fans, but I'm not mad about Ico or Shadow of the Colossus as games. They're more sculpture than games, although to a limited degree, I can appreciate them for that. Still, I wonder if The Last Guardian will pay off in gaming as much as it does in aspirations to high-concept art. Awe and wonder are all well and good, but there's nothing wrong with a dose of real fun. Unless it's a broken mess, Guardian will review well and have a large cult following.

Thomas Wilde: I'm pretty sure if this weren't on my list somewhere, the hardcore police would show up at my house and staplegun me to an Xbox Live headset.
