7. 'The Last of Us' (PS3)

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character-driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The Last of Us is a postapocalyptic franchise from the creators of Uncharted. While Uncharted was nothing but lighthearted fun, The Last of Us seems to be anything but. The game focuses on two survivors, Joel and Ellie, as they struggle to survive in a plague-ravaged near-future America. The game emphasizes hard decisions and the brutal cost of survival, with videos and gameplay footage hinting that killing won't be a pleasant and sanitized experience. Uncharted is one of the finest franchises of this generation, and seeing more from the same developer is something any gamer will get excited about.

Dustin Chadwell: I'm a huge Uncharted fan, almost more for the setting and aesthetics than for the gameplay. The Last of Us seems to nail the look and feel of a world gone to hell in a way that only Naughty Dog can really capture. I'm very intrigued by the dynamic between the protagonists and how the co-op nature of gameplay will shake down in the final product. I'm also a sucker for postapocalyptic scenarios in media, and The Last of Us looks like one of the few promising takes on that particular genre.

Brian Dumlao: Putting together a not-quite-zombie apocalypse story isn't exactly eyebrow-raising, but that all changes when you learn that Naughty Dog is behind it. Of interest is the single-player co-op with some partner AI that looks competent. Also of interest is the enemy AI, which seems to display a very impressive level of intelligence. The development team at Santa Monica hasn't disappointed yet, and The Last of Us doesn't look like it'll buck that trend.

Thomas Wilde: I'm a sucker for a good apocalypse, and as critical as I am of the Uncharted games (or more specifically, about how Nathan Drake can maintain his happy-go-lucky everyman demeanor despite the fact he is the sixth leading cause of death in whatever country he's in), Naughty Dog can put together high-adrenaline action tableaux like no other studio. I'm hoping that The Last of Us carries that trend forward.
