GameStop's Q2 2008 financial result reveals that the retailer made a killing, with total sales increase 35%, store sales up 20%, making its net earnings increase 162%. The positive result is mainly driven by its used game sales, attributed to the weak economy, as it buys low and sells high. During its conf. call Gamestop execs expect a $50 price drop for X360 and PS3 before year's end. While Microsoft is expected to lower its console price, SCEA has stated several times that it will not cut its price.

Just as Sony's PS3 price cut was prematurely leaked through early ads, the rumored Xbox 360 price cut might also become a reality soon. Ads for Walmart and Toys 'R Us reveal that on Sunday, August 12, both retail chain stores will drop the price for the Xbox 360 by $50, to $349. Whether this reduction is only for the premium system was not clear, as that was the only model printed in the ad.

American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy said the Xbox was likely to overtake the PS2 on a units-sold basis for the first time ever in the United States in April. He estimated Xbox sales of 275,000 units this month, versus about 200,000 units for the PS2. PS2 sales have been falling in the United States this year, and in the just-ended fiscal year Sony said PS2 unit shipments fell 37 percent in North America. Unless Sony cuts the price on its PS2 in order to spur sales, U.S. game software makers, many of whom track Sony's fiscal year, may find sales growth targets harder to reach, analysts said.

CNN Money reports that Sony was planning to stun the world and release the PlayStation 3 this year. At least one major wire service took the bait and ran the story, forcing Sony to issue a quick and firm denial. Even the most optimistic sources don't expect to see the next "next generation" consoles until late 2004 – and that's almost certainly a fantasy. More and more, it appears that the PlayStation 3, Xbox 2 (or, as some are calling it, the "Ybox") and next Nintendo game machine won't see the light of day until 2006.. A price cut is widely expected for PS2 in May, but publishers and analysts are starting to reign in expectations for that as well. $179 is being batted around as a potential new price point, rather than the $149 everyone was so certain about last year.

CNN Money reports that we can expect another round of price cuts before mid-year, most likely right around the same time as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry's annual trade show. Most execs are predicting another $50 reduction, taking the Xbox and PS2 to $149 and the GameCube to $99. While unlikely, they acknowledge it's not inconceivable that PS2 and Xbox prices could fall to $99 (and, by default, the GameCube would slip to $50).
