'Stubbs The Zombie' (Xbox/PC) Gets Co-Op Play - Screens & Trailer

Aspyr Media and Wideload Games today announced the addition of co-op play in the Xbox version of Stubbs the Zombie game. The player controls a wisecracking zombie named Stubbs, who takes on an ultra-modern city of the future using nothing but his own carcass and the weapons of his possessed enemies.

On his quest, Stubbs lurches his way through numerous large and visually captivating indoor/outdoor environments in and around the gleaming city of Punchbowl, PA, a city built during the Eisenhower administration to show off the ultra-futuristic technology of the 21st century. Stubbs’ brain-eating adventure brings him through bustling shopping districts and verdant farmlands to battle mad scientists, rural militiamen and the world's deadliest barbershop quartet. His enemies have shotguns, tanks, and all manner of futuristic weaponry. All Stubbs has is his own rotting corpse, a distinct lack of pain or conscience, and the ability to turn foes into zombie allies.

What begins as one zombie’s search for revenge quickly escalates into an all-out war between the living and the dead - but this time it's the zombie fighting for truth, justice and the redemption of true love. Yes, it's a love story too.

In the game, players take on the role of Stubbs the Zombie. Before his premature death, Edward "Stubbs" Stubblefield was just another traveling salesman trying to get by during the Great Depression. His lifelong losing streak reached its logical conclusion when he was brutally murdered and ignominiously buried in a remote Pennsylvania field. Players get to assume the role of Stubbs after he emerges from his grave with a penchant for brains. Players control Stubbs as he lurches through several environments in and around Punchbowl, PA, a gleaming city of the future, while feeding on the brains of the populace and anyone else who stands in the way.

Now with the co-op play, two Zombies can make their way through the city simultaneously, seeking revenge and eating brains. Playing along side Stubbs is Grubbs, a fellow traveling salesman who, through a series of unfortunate coincidences, ended up in the same unmarked grave as Stubbs with a similar suit and fatal stomach injury. (Life sure is funny that way.) In split-screen co-op gut-throwing play, two zombies have each other’s back as they make their way through Punchbowl’s angry denizens – militia men, riot cops and much, much more.

The general game mechanics in co-op mode are the same, but double the fun. Players will have many weapons at the tips of their rotting fingers as they double their zombie hordes through:

  • Conversion - Death is not the end! When Stubbs or Grubbs kills an enemy, they become one of his zombie minions. These zombies will attack humans when possible and attempt to follow Stubbs and Grubbs in their crusade. Building and maintaining a horde of zombies is crucial to beating the game’s biggest encounters.
  • The Hand – Stubbs and Grubbs can detach their arms, throw them and control the arm as a separate character. The arm is faster than humans, can go places where Stubbs nor Grubbs can fit, is expendable (so it can be sent into certain death), and can possess human characters.
  • Possession - Using detached arms, Stubbs and Grubbs can possess human characters, giving them access to their weapons, speed, and other abilities.
  • Gut Grenade - Stubbs and Grubbs can throw gut grenades, a ranged area-of-effect weapon. They can reach into their guts, pull out some viscera and lob it like a grenade to cause damage and stun opponents.
  • Unholy Flatulence – Stubbs and Grubbs can unleash unholy flatulence, a local, last ditch area-of-effect attack, which will kill humans in the immediate vicinity.
  • Zombie Strength - Stubbs and Grubbs super-strength allows them to smash through boarded-up doors and lay waste to the humans cowering behind it with powerful melee attacks.
  • Bowling Heads -- Strike! Stubbs and Grubbs can bowl their head into enemies and strategically detonate them. After the head explodes, it turns anyone in the vicinity into zombies.

Technical features include an enhanced version of Halo's graphic engine with all new pixel shaders, new screen effects for an appropriately cinematic look and feel, and a new AI system for the most keenly intelligent mindless zombies in the history of video games.
