Run 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' (X360/PC) On Older Hardware With Oldblivion

by Rainier on April 22, 2006 @ 8:23 p.m. PDT

Oblivion is the latest chapter in the epic and highly successful Elder Scrolls saga and utilizes the latest PC and next-generation video game hardware to fully immerse you in the experience. You can unravel the main quest at your own pace or explore the vast world and find your own challenges.

Get TES IV: Oblivion Oldblivion tool off WP (1mb)

Oldblivion is a piece of software which allows graphics cards which are pre DirectX9 to run Elder Scrolls: Oblivion from Bethesda. This means that Oblivion can run on cards such as Geforce 3, Geforce 4, Radeon 9200 and so on. Oldblivion is still in an early development phase but it's fairly stable, however there still are a few bugs and kinks to work out.

How does oldblivion work?

Oldblivion attaches to Oblivion and applies certain patches to it. Some of these patches are for making sure that Oblivion doesn't crash when run on hardware which lacks certain new functionality. It also changes the shaders used by Oblivion from pixel shader 2.0 and vertex shader 2.0 into pixel shader 1.1 and vertex shader 1.1.

Supported cards

If you have a card which works well with Oldblivion but is not listed here, please let us know.
- Geforce 3 series
- Geforce 4 series
- Geforce FX 5200 series
- Geforce PCX 5300
- Geforce FX 5500
- Geforce FX 5700 series
- Radeon 9550
- Radeon 9200 series
- Radeon 9000 series
- Radeon 8500 series

Cards with some issues but working

- SiS 760
- Geforce FX 5100 GO

Poorly supported cards

- Intel GMA 900 (frequent crashes reported, consider 3danalyze instead)

Unsupported cards

- S3 series integrated cards
- Most Intel series integrated cards
- Geforce 4 MX
- Geforce 2

Working with the custom shaders

Simply open oldblivion.cfg and change the AssembleShaders to 1 and DisassembleShaders to 1. It will assemble the shaders for you each time you start Oblivion. These are developer settings. If you find something which is an improvement please post the modified shader file(s) in the optimization section of the forum for the community to test. If they're an improvement I'll include them in the next release.

Obtaining sourcecode

Source is not available right now. If at any time the project is abandoned by me (asp) I will release the source so that people can update the software when Bethesda releases patches.
