BioWare Licenses StreamBase Stream Processing Engine for MMO

by Rainier on April 2, 2007 @ 3:47 p.m. PDT

StreamBase Systems announced that BioWare has adopted the StreamBase Stream Processing Engine to enable and accelerate the development of its next-generation Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) gaming platform.

StreamBase already has a strong track record as the leading provider of high-performance Complex Event Processing (CEP) software to many of the world’s most prominent financial institutions, along with strong adoption rates within the government/military sector. With the adoption now in online gaming, and amongst e-businesses, StreamBase continues to lead the industry in offering the most scalable, adaptable platform for low-latency stream processing.

BioWare, well-recognized for its innovation in role-playing games, decided to expand its business model by entering the genre of MMO gaming, in which thousands of players interact with one another in a virtual world. The pending release of this MMO game has the potential to convert a large percentage of BioWare’s loyal fans into paying subscribers, while also attracting many new fans from the rapidly growing pool of MMO game players worldwide. To support a world-class MMO gaming experience, BioWare required a platform with robust scalability and persistence capabilities to store, process, and query large volumes of data in real time.

“After we evaluated the StreamBase CEP software, we quickly realized that partnering with them would cut our server development costs by multiple man years,” said Bill Dalton, Technical Director at BioWare. “Therefore, partnering with StreamBase was clearly the right choice to deliver on budget and on time.”

With StreamBase, BioWare has gained instant intelligence into handling large numbers of player interactions and events within its MMO environment. As a result, BioWare is able to deliver a gaming experience unlike anything the industry has seen before. Through its use of StreamBase, BioWare is able to monitor the game environment in real time and immediately offer fixes for any game oddities, and to identify and react to malicious player behavior in real time to ensure game integrity. In addition, StreamBase’s graphical “point & click” development environment has enabled BioWare to achieve design and implementation times which are orders of magnitude shorter than traditional custom coding, and with fewer errors. This frees their programmers and game developers to concentrate on delivering the best possible stories and characters and to expertly extend their vision to the world of Massive Multiplayer Online gaming without worrying about the underlying infrastructure performance and scalability.

“StreamBase is designed to process enormous amounts of real-time information at blindingly fast speeds, making it an ideal platform for delivering a rich online gaming experience for thousands of players simultaneously,” said Barry Morris, Chairman and CEO of StreamBase. “BioWare’s MMO gaming initiative is an excellent example of the many kinds of real-time applications that can take advantage of the rapid time-to-value our CEP software offers.”
