'Time of Defiance' Shuts Down End Of July

by Rainier on July 21, 2010 @ 12:48 p.m. PDT

Time of Defiance is an online-only massively multiplayer real-time strategy game set across the huge landscape of the shattered world of Nespanona. Fight for conquest of the islands and mine their mineral wealth to expand your empire.

Time of Defiance is a unique campaign based MMO-RTS where players can actually win. Its online nature makes it a perfect fit for the Two Degrees Network. The game combines the intrigue of playing with hundreds of others in a 3D universe with all the elements of a traditional real time strategy game in exciting 4 week space combat campaigns. Players guide the destiny of their own empire by battling other empires for control of islands left over from a shattered planet and the vital resources they contain. Because your empire remains persistent through each game campaign you survive, treachery, propaganda, alliances, and trade are just as important in Time of Defiance as your fighting strategy.

Real time strategy gamers will enjoy the resource management, fleet and equipment building, space exploration, and of course, the ultimate battle for land and glory.

It is with great sadness that Nicely Crafted Entertainment announced that Time of Defiance will be shutting down forever at the end of this month.

So why is this happening?

Well, Time of Defiance is an old, old game and does not generate any revenue. Whilst this would not normally prevent it just pottering on for those of you who still love and play the game (it costs very little to keep it operating), there are some networking, software and other infrastructure changes that we're about to make that will disable ToD permanently. We need to make these changes for future products and development and, unfortunately, we're not going to be able to find the time, money and resource to modify ToD to take account of these changes. As a result, we will have to pull the plug on the servers close to the end of July 2010.

Time of Defiance has been playable in one form or another since the first ever little test-game back in the Summer of 2001. With just medium warships, a coloniser and three buildings and a manually edited map with just four islands, the founding original three members of staff fought for an entire afternoon and forgot to get any work done. At this point, ToD was born. It came on a long way over the years but was unable to attract large numbers of players for all sorts of reasons. Whilst the real fans of the game know how addictive that it can be, it takes a good investment of time to get to know it and also to play it effectively.

We wish to thank each and every player of ToD over the years. Without your enthusiasm, we'd never have kept it up and running for so long with so few active users. Likewise, without your feedback and comments, the game would never have developed to the refined state that it did. It has been an absolute pleasure battling with you all!

Hopefully you'll all move over to our new Picaroon game. Picaroon uses the latest Nice Technology engine and has all sorts of wonderful features for game-players of all types. If you sign up for the beta programme and mention your ToD history in the sign-up form then we'll do our level best to get you up and running as soon as we possibly can.

The Shadoo, Cog and Eighth House wish you a happy games-playing future!
