'Underworld Ascendant' Reaches Funding Target, Onto Stretch Goals

by Rainier on Feb. 27, 2015 @ 9:01 a.m. PST

Far more than a dungeon crawl, Underworld Ascendant not only modernizes the series’ visuals and user interface to take full advantage of the today’s hardware, but also innovates in bold new ways.

In 1992, Ultima Underworld changed the rules of what a fantasy RPG could be. It introduced the concept of 3D immersion, a player-authored experience, and a richly dynamic world to explore. Its influence led to a whole generation of games such as ThiefDeus ExBioShockSkyrim, and Dragon Age. Underworld has been hidden away in the deepest vaults of its publisher for two decades. Only now have the original creators unchained the franchise, freeing it to innovate yet again.

Backing the game grants you unprecedented front row access to the creation of the next epoch of this storied masterpiece, Underworld Ascendant.

Otherside Entertainment, led by System Shock & Thief creator Paul Neurath, has launched a Kickstarter campaign, to complete development of Underworld Ascendant.

Paul Neurath, Founder, OtherSide Entertainment said: “We’re humbled. Honored to have your support. And, to be honest, a bit relieved that we actually did reach the milestone. The team is incredibly excited that we can now make the game we have so passionately wanted to make for 20 years, and do it together with you.”

With the sequel to the Ultima Underworld series now funded, OtherSide has announced that it making a few adjustments to its initial stretch goal tier.

A whole new area of the Underworld – The Underswamp – will open up when the game reaches the $650,000 mark; at $700,000 celebrated fantasy author Tracy Hickman will write an Underworld Ascendant prequel novel; and Lizardmen, a fan favorite, will be included in the final game if the Kickstarter campaign achieves the $750,000 stretch goal target.
