'Monstrum' Gets Release Date, Coming Soon - Trailer

by Rainier on May 15, 2015 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT

Focusing on the oft forgotten "survival" element of survival horror games, Monstrum sees players trapped upon a derelict cargo ship, prey to an unknown monster that stalks its halls.

Combining permadeath, a variety of different hunters and a procedurally generated ship that changes its layout every time, Monstrum is a challenging and punishing game that aims to be a truly replayable horror experience.

Monstrum finds players stranded aboard a vast, derelict ship filled with traps, environmental hazards, and another passenger in the shape of a terrifying and deadly beast. With no means to take their pursuer down the player must search the ship to discover a possible means of escape, using their wits and guile to evade the monster hunting them, running, hiding and luring it away with distractions to avoid getting killed.

With randomly generated environments and roguelike sensibilities, can you survive long enough in the rusting labyrinth to make your escape?

Director Jaime Cross says: "We're really excited to be launching Monstrum fully next week! It's been a lot of hard sailing from the initial Early Access release in January until this point, so we're delighted to navigate our way here. I'm all out of bad puns, but it's been genuinely amazing to see all these people playing Monstrum so far, how they take to it, and making it better thanks to their input. Watching videos and seeing fanart from people all across the world has really made the whole thing worthwhile, so we hope that they like the new additions we're adding into the final version."

Game Features

  • Three Unique Monsters: Face one of three monster types each play-through, each one with different behaviours and tactics. Can you work your way out of an ambush or escape a direct attack? And will the same actions work every time?
  • Procedural Arena : Prepare for a different gameplay environment each time you play as the ship's interior shifts shape with every run, changing the location of items along the way.
  • Escape Routes: Discover different methods of escape and delve into the bowels of the ship to recover items you need to repair them.
  • Opportunities and Hazards: Use whatever you can find to try and outwit the monster. Hide in lockers or under furniture. Use distractions to attract the monster to you, or, perhaps more wisely, to where you've just been, but be careful not to run too fast lest you fall into one of the ships numerous traps along the way.
  • Permadeath: Death is death. Get killed in Monstrum and you'll be starting again. In a different ship, probably against a different monster. Good luck. Start running.

Monstrum will be available as digital download for £11.99/€14.99/$17.99.
