'Splatoon 2' (Switch) Gets v3.0 Update Next Month, Octo Expansion Announced - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on March 8, 2018 @ 6:17 p.m. PST

Get hyped about splatting ink and claiming turf, as the squid-like Inklings return in a colorful and chaotic 4 vs. 4 action shooter.

For the first time, take Turf War battles on-the-go via local multiplayer in portable play styles. You can also compete in frenetic online matches like before.

Two years have passed since the release of Splatoon, and two years have also passed in the game world, leading to an evolution in fashion trends and new styles of weapons and gear. Staying fresh never looked so good.

The first paid DLC is coming to Splatoon 2 this summer for $19.99.

Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion adds a hefty new single-player mode that lets players play as new character Agent 8, an Octoling (!) with lost memories. The new single-player campaign features 80 missions, as well as new stories that shed new light on beloved characters. Players that complete the Octo Expansion campaign will unlock the ability to play as Octolings in multiplayer battles. While Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion launches this summer, players can pre-purchase the DLC starting today in Nintendo eShop to immediately receive Octo-themed in-game gear to use in battle right away.

The new adventure will feature 80 missions starring Agent 8, a new character who awakens without her memories on a dark subway platform. Navigate the twisted depths in a battle to reach the surface of Inkopolis. Once you escape, you'll be able to join multiplayer matches as an Octoling!

  • Play as an Octoling who's lost her memory in a new single-player adventure spanning 80 missions.
  • Navigate an underground facility to reach the surface of Inkopolis.
  • Take on a variety of mission types packed with new challenges you won't find in the main game.
  • Complete the campaign to unlock Octolings (Girl or Boy) as playable characters in multiplayer* battles.
  • Unravel mysteries hidden below Inkopolis with Pearl, Marina, & Cap'n Cuttlefish.
In April, Splatoon 2 is getting a major free update (Version 3.0) that contains 100+ new pieces of gear, more stages rolling out throughout spring (Piranha Pit, Camp Triggerfish and Wahoo World) and a new rank (Rank X). Rank X is an extreme rank, even higher than S+.

Key Features:

  • New weapons – New dual-wielding Splat Dualies join the action, complete with a new Dodge Roll move. Mainstays like the Splat Roller and Splat Charger have also been remixed to include new gameplay mechanics and brand-new special weapons.
  • Local and Online Multiplayer – In a first for the series, compete in local multiplayer Turf War battles, whether in TV mode or on-the-go in handheld or tabletop modes. Online battles also make a return.
  • New ways to play – Play using the Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, both of which allow for gyro controls for better aiming and control.
  • New Trends – Two years have passed since the release of Splatoon in real life, and two years have also passed in the game world. Some familiar characters return under different circumstances, and new characters are introduced as well.
  • Fresh Updates - Similar to Splatoon for Wii U, updates will roll out post-launch, adding new content.
  • Smart Device Support – An upcoming smart-phone application for the Nintendo Switch system will enhance matchmaking and allow for voice chat options.
  • Turf War – Iconic 4 vs. 4 Turf War battles return. The goal is to splat ink on as much territory as possible, while strategically submerging yourself in your team's colors and blasting your enemies.

Splatoon 2 is currently available exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
