'Spaceland' Introduces Away Team Members

by Rainier on June 27, 2019 @ 2:14 p.m. PDT

Spaceland is a sci-fi tactical RPG that has you taking on the roles of various members of a futuristic kill team — dropping into alien bases and doing away with threats in a fast-paced reworking of the traditional Tactical RPG formula.

In Spaceland, battles are quick, with no time wasted deciding on character costumes, load-outs, and other nitty-gritty details, as each character is already kitted for battle and raring for action. As these are heroic adventurers, players won’t lose time on recovering from missed shots, rather, the focus is on skilled team member placement for the best line of sight and optimal shots with their equipped weaponry. Speed and smart unit placement is the order of the day in this streamlined take on classic tactical RPGs!

Spaceland is the latest creation from Tortuga Team, the developers behind the successful multiplatform fantasy tactical RPG series — Braveland. The game drops players into the boots of a tough-as-nails tactical team of Space Rangers Lead as they explore an alien world and defeat its vicious denizens in turn-based combat. Shoot, kick, hide, blast, crush — do whatever you can to outsmart and defeat the alien menace!

In the classic traditions of the science-fiction genre, you’ll be tasked with gathering a team of fighters to unravel secrets of the mystical planet your valiant team has landed on. Rich dialogues will reveal the true colors of your teammates, and if you’re lucky, you’ll uncover special details of their individual backstories.

Spaceland puts you in command of a team of space heroes as they explore new worlds and defeat alien threats, through both wits and weaponry!

Here's an overview of three of the key “away team” members from the game.

Name : Terra
Role : Squad engineer, hacker, medical support
Standard Loadout: Plasma Rifle, Medkit

Terra was enlisted to the Alpha Squad as their technical specialist, as her engineering and hacking skills are always welcome in an away team. Her hacking skills are top-notch, and she loves unlocking unfamiliar computer systems. Her skills focus more on disabling systems than discovering their deepest digital secrets, so she's great for getting past electronic lock systems and the like. When you need a security seal bypassed, Terra's the soldier for the job!

Due to her lack of military training, her Alpha Squad teammates sometimes look down on her, as they are often called on to provide cover- and suppressive fire while she's busy hacking the nearest data terminal. More often than not, however, she proves herself to be a valuable team asset - not only by hacking through alien security systems but also by making use of her Xeno-blasting plasma rifle, along with her medical abilities. The plasma rifle is a devastating weapon, though it's hampered by its limited ammo, so Terra needs to use it sparingly and from only the most advantageous positions. It, of course, goes without saying, that her medkits are always a welcome sight in battle.

Name : Barrett
Role : Close-combat specialist
Standard Loadout: Shotgun, pistol, grenades

Barrett has seen a lot in his lifetime and knows what it means to carry the mantle of Space Ranger. To save lives, he has to act quickly, regardless of the rules. His hot temper, combined with his "jump in feed first" nature, often leads to him ending up in unpleasant situations - both on the battlefield and at his base station. Never a fan of authority, he loathes the bureaucrats that make up the office staff at Ranger HQ.

Those who've earned his respect know him as a cheerful and loyal comrade who will never abandon them, no matter how bad the odds are stacked against them. Armed with a devastating short-range shotgun, Barrett is a deadly fighter at point blank, and his secondary weapon, a pistol with limitless ammo, means he can slap leather with the best galactic gunslingers.

And, when bullets aren't quite up to the job, Barrett has a few fearsome friends in the form of explosive grenades, which do massive damage to a small area.

When you need to eradicate aliens in a hurry, Barrett's your man.

Name : Jim
Role : Scout
Standard Loadout: Assault rifle, plasma sword, mines

New to the Space Rangers, Jim's struggling to earn the respect of his squad mates, but that doesn't mean he isn't a competent Ranger. Sporting very high ideals, Jim shows respect to everyone he feels deserves it and has a strong sense of justice.

His medium-range assault rifle shreds aliens with ease, while his plasma sword can slice through those who make it through his relentless waves of bullets.

Jim is the perfect scout, relying on his speed in combat. A large reserve of action points allows him to actively maneuver and even engage in melee with the enemy. He is also able to make medium distance dashes, moving into perfect flanking positions before the enemy knows he's there.

Lastly, Jim packs a small anti-personnel mine, allowing him to prevent enemy advances while he can create choke points and protected zones.

Key Features:

  • We’re Going Old-School: Inspired by classics of the genre such as XCOM, Laser Squad, and Incubation, Spaceland turns up the heat on the battlefield by offering a playstyle that is familiar, yet uniquely exciting.
  • Quick N’ Fun: Fast and furious battles focus on the action and only take 10-15 minutes. Planning is good, but blasting is better!
  • Packing the Heat: Equip your team with futuristic weapons such as Dash Thrusters, Grenades, Teleporters, Mines, Power Shields, and much more! Scavenge surroundings for equipment and ammo in a hostile environment with scarce resources.
  • Explore and Exterminate: Discover the secrets of alien bases as you explore them, unlocking new data and expanding your digital encyclopedia of alien info — all of which will help you annihilate them with ease!
  • A Beast for Every Occasion: Fight for your life against alien lifeforms that feature speed, strength, armor, and more — all challenging your tactical mettle as you figure out the best way to defeat each type

Spaceland is coming to PC in Q3 2019.
