'Broken Lines' (ALL) Character Overview, Gets PC Date - Screens

by Rainier on Feb. 11, 2020 @ 8:28 a.m. PST

Broken Lines is a story-driven squad-based tactics game, about dying, retrying and slowly getting crazy in the process.

“Are you sure about that... ...is this safe?” “It is perfectly safe, Mills. Don’t worry about it!” You execute your cunning battle plan and see private Mills run along the road, only to be cut down by machinegun fire - again. How many times do you force him down this path, before you let him rest in peace? Will you cut your losses and accept defeat, before your delusions of reliving the war over and over again drives you truly insane?

Broken Lines is a story-rich simultaneous turn-based tactical game, with a rogue-inspired structure.

In this alternate version of WWII, enemies are both mysterious military units and the soldiers’ own hopes and fears as they confront the mental and physical horrors of war during their struggle to return to friendly territory.

Broken Lines combines a tactical-RPG playstyle with a “pause and play” format. This offers players more fluid and realistic gameplay with the action automatically pausing when new dangers appear, allowing the player to respond to the new tactical situation.

Play the campaign with randomized missions and non-linear stories with a lot of atmosphere (a bit like FTL/Sunless Sea/Darkest Dungeon). Select and equip your squad, train them in unique combat skills and perks, plan your turn in pause mode and see it play out in real time. Use cover and flanking to overcome the opposition, rewind the level to achieve a better score and loot, manage resources and survive until the rescue-team can extract you.

You play a newly appointed lieutenant leading a disorderly squad, fighting for survival in a fictive war in Eastern Europe. Shellshocked and without combat experience, you struggle with leading your men while keeping your marbles. In your mind you experiences the combat scenarios again and again, allowing you to correct your mistakes, but also driving you further towards madness. Should you sacrifice your sanity to save your men or stay sane and watch them die?

This character overview gives you a look at the soldiers you will command in Broken Lines, including each soldier’s personality quirks and special abilities.

Character nameDescriptionTaglineQuote

Recruit Fry

The youngest in the squad and an educated combat medic, Fry has high ideals and the squad often perceives him as self righteous - and they're not far off.

The stubborn nerd

“I’m not just a book-smart snob, I can fight too!”

Recruit Avery

A hot-headed Scotsman, Avery keeps a sarcastic distance to everything related to the war, and is generally impossible to lead a serious conversation with.

The brash gambler

“Play the hand you’re dealt, even if it’s a shite one.”

Veteran Morgan

An iron-willed veteran with solid experience in leadership and combat, being a part of the war since its beginning is starting to take its toll on Morgan. His best days are behind him, but he's too stubborn to show any weakness

The weary veteran

“If you’ve seen one war, you’ve seen them all.”

Veteran Hailey

Formerly a field medic, Hailey was handed a gun at the front one dire day and asked to fight. Since then, she never looked back. A skilled Irishwoman who has lost too many of her comrades in battle, she bullies green recruits to keep her mind busy

The troubled medic

“Killing shouldn’t be this easy for me.”

Recruit Sherman

Sherman became a radio operator due to his talents and interests in electronics. After fleeing an occupied base, he ended up in the front and was promoted to the ranks. He tries to avoid unnecessary violence, and has a strong sense of justice.

The nervous tinkerer

“I’m just a tech guy, I never asked for any of this!”

Recruit Wood

A charming young recruit with a disarming smile, Wood's lean frame makes him the squad's fastest runner. He can be quite an opportunistic people-pleaser, with a joke ready for any occasion - and not always a good one.

The charming jokester

“If you can’t laugh at life, then life will laugh at you.”

Veteran King

A big, intimidating man from a family with a strong tradition of military service, King has a talent for manipulating people - with his fists if necessary. For him, morality is a grey zone meant to be challenged.

The bullish soldier

“Fighting for His Majesty is a family tradition!”

Veteran Conner

Considered eccentric by most of the squad, Conner guards her past and personal life carefully. She works best alone with a rifle, hunting enemies and animals; after a recent head injury, she tends to confuse the two.

The lone wolf

“People just get in the way.”
