'The Walking Dead Onslaught' (ALL) Reveals More Gameplay Details - Trailer

by Rainier on Sept. 9, 2020 @ 2:18 p.m. PDT

Fight your fears head-on in The Walking Dead Onslaught as you assume the roles of their favorite survivors from the TV series, struggling against the relentless walker threat while confronting both the horrors and humanity of this apocalyptic world.

There’s no rest when survival is on the line. Prepare to plunge into the terrifying, genre-defying world of The Walking Dead--but can you survive the relentless walker threat?

The Walking Dead Onslaught gives you the chance to play as a survivor and to experience two different sides of the walker apocalypse: a wrenching narrative original to the game and classic supply runs with randomized weapon and item pickups. And once you’ve ventured out into the unpredictable wilderness, you’ll be taking out walkers with melee and gun attacks like you’ve never seen before in VR. Survios’s new, multilayered Progressive Dismemberment System, puts you so close to the visceral horrors of the walker threat that you can feel it. It’s also been described as being immensely satisfying…make of that what you will.

With an exclusive original story, visceral real-motion melee and ranged combat, player progression and a full campaign mode, AMC and Survios deliver the most immersive “The Walking Dead” experience yet.

Players will fight as Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Carol to gather needed resources to rebuild the settlement, restore society, and prepare for an onslaught of walker-slaying mayhem.

Set in the time skip between Season 8 and 9 of AMC’s The Walking Dead, the game takes place during a period with a lot of uncertainty in the future of our survivors’ communities. The war against Negan and his deadly band of Saviors has finally come to an end, but the damage they inflicted lingers on in the hearts of those left behind. We decided to theme our game around the idea of rebuilding after losing everything, and that started with the place our leading cast calls home: the Alexandria Safe Zone.

We’ve worked with AMC’s Producers and The Walking Dead writers to craft an original story that sees Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes butting heads over their visions for the future of the safe zone. Where Rick believes that some personal sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the community, Daryl believes this has put their freedom to do good at risk. Rick represents the collectivist spirit to push society forward through his focus on rebuilding the new world. On the other hand, Daryl represents the individual human struggle in the apocalypse and demonstrates how Rick’s altruistic goals might not always benefit everyone.

These two different viewpoints are embodied in the very way players will experience the game, swapping between perspectives as Rick tries to rebuild Alexandria and as Daryl reveals the details behind a mysterious disappearance.

A place to call home: rebuilding Alexandria

We knew it was important to represent Alexandria in a way that was authentic to the show while adding a layer of interactivity that allows players to lead the efforts to rebuild the community. The player will be at the heart of Alexandria as their decisions and actions help evolve it into a place for new survivors to call home.

Players will venture out to collect resources for Alexandria, bringing back food and fuel that will support scouting parties and new survivors. As the community grows, players will receive letters and requisition requests from their survivors that send them out to find specific items and provide big bonuses for Alexandria. Players have full agency over how they want to progress the community — crafting materials they’ve earned can be used to upgrade weapons in the Armory or build entirely new structures in Alexandria that can enhance your gameplay experience.

Crafting the dream arsenal

One of our favorite spots in Alexandria is the Armory, which houses all of the weapons players will discover outside Alexandria. Here, players can explore and experiment with The Walking Dead Onslaught’s robust weapon upgrade system. From Rick’s revolver to the Kingdom’s powerful battle axes, each weapon has multiple unique upgrades to mix and match — of course, players will need to save up enough materials to craft the upgrades first.

Melee combat upgrades tend to be more fantastical. For example, crafting the Adrenaline upgrade grants players a burst of momentary slo-mo action against a walker herd. When it comes to firearms, upgrades are designed to be a little more tactical. Ranged weapon upgrades affect the weapon’s performance in combat and include visual attachments like vertical grips, holosights and muzzle breaks.

In the end, we want players to have a fun time killing walkers on their own terms, and we accomplished that by providing a toolset of weapons that are constantly evolving and changing the way players take on the walker threat that surrounds them.

Key Features:

  • Campaign Story:Play as Daryl Dixon through an original campaign story about a supply run gone awry and an ensuing encounter with a watchful stranger in a mysterious town.
  • Alexandria Safe Zone: Watch the transformation of Alexandria as the settlement is rebuilt into a fortress of hope. Spend resources wisely to create structures for unique stat boosts, essential upgrades, and more.
  • Visceral Real-Motion Combat: Onslaught introduces the most visceral combat experience that veteran VR-studio Survios has built to date. Scavenge and wield an arsenal of iconic melee and ranged weapons using real-motion VR mechanics - and experience the variety of their graphic end results.
  • Progressive Dismemberment System: We are progressing VR with interactions between you and an object, offering a variety of end results through multiple thresholds. It’s the most visceral combat experience that Survios has built to date.
    • Delimbing: Walker limbs are vulnerable for removal at many joints, including arms, legs and neck
    • Carving: Proprietary “gore mesh” creates realistic wounds anywhere on a walker’s body
    • Impaling: enemies get impaled and react where they are stabbed
    • Context-based physics: varying reactions take place based on context; precise slicing through enemies result in getting stuck, resistance when pulling out weapons and grappling (a challenging technique in VR)
  • Fast-Action Survival: Every trip beyond the walls of Alexandria means a chance to collect valuable weapons, food, materials, and other resources for the community. But beware: each supply run provides unpredictable walker encounters, resource availability, and obstacles to test your sense of flight or fight.
  • Melle Restraint System:
    • Walkers can also be grabbed and restrained for precision melee attacks and strategic defense
    • Walkers can also be pushed and thrown at other walkers
  • +24 Realistic Weapons:  Discover a robust arsenal of 24 weapons with realistic handling and a variety of modifications to fine-tune and suit your combat style.
  • Voice Acting by Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), Melissa McBride (Carol), and Josh McDermitt (Eugene)

The Walking Dead Onslaught’s PS4 version will also be compatible with the next-gen PS5.

The Walking Dead Onslaught is coming to Playstation VR, and PC (Steam VR, HTC Vive or Oculus Rift) on September 29, 2020 for $29.99.
