5. 'Resident Evil: Village' (PS5/PS4/XSX/XOne/PC)

by Judy on Feb. 15, 2021 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Experience survival horror like never before in Resident Evil Village, which will elevate each desperate fight to survive by showcasing the most realistic and terrifying graphics to date.

Redmond Carolipio: A lot of the pure anticipation for Resident Evil 8 stems from the awesome previous chapter, which showed how first-person and a slight return to actual horror can rejuvenate interest in the entire series. Every RE game features a blend of disturbing imagery, characters that can trigger a number of visceral reactions, and palpable tension while you're trying to solve some kind of puzzle. Poor Ethan can't catch a break, and we'll be better entertained for it.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The Resident Evil franchise has been on a roll lately. The excellent Resident Evil 7 was followed up by the masterful Resident Evil 2 Remake, and even the somewhat disappointing Resident Evil 3 was still a darn good time. Resident Evil 8 will hopefully continue that trend with its ambitious new ideas. Players once again take control of RE7 protagonist Ethan as he ventures to a mysterious snowy village in search of Chris Redfield, who seemingly murdered his wife and kidnapped his child. This village is populated by monsters, including werewolf-like beasts and an extremely tall Victorian vampire woman who the internet has already fallen in love with. So far, it looks to be continuing the general feel and tone of RE7 but with enemies that seem a lot more interesting than the Molded. We'll get our chance to see it soon, as Village is set for release this May.

Cody Medellin: Mention Resident Evil: Village, and the first thing many people will think about is Lady Dimitrescu. Get past all of the tall lady memes, and what you'll find is Capcom refining the chance it took on giving series fans a new protagonist and a new viewpoint. RE7 was Capcom's way of bringing the series back to its horror roots, and it was successful, so there's no doubt that it can pull off that same feat — even if VR is off the table this time around.

David Silbert: Resident Evil: Village has taken the internet by storm, in large part thanks to the 9'6" Lady Dimitrescu. Absurdly tall zombies aside, Village has a lot going for it, with stellar visuals, eerie first-person gameplay, and the return of franchise favorite Chris Redfield. Details remain scarce, but if the quality of the recent Resident Evil remakes are any indication, Village looks to be another quality addition to the spooky series.
