by Rainier on Aug. 8, 2006 @ 11:39 a.m. PDT

Another day, another batch of games shipped to stores. Instead of giving them all their own posts, we grouped them, and so far there are announcements for:

Dead Rising (Xbox 360)

Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but.It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping center, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.

Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter othersurvivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.

Dead Rising includes the following features:

  • Huge environment – expansive indoor and outdoor areas of the mall provide a variety of different locations to explore
  • Swarm technology allows an unprecedented amount of enemies on screen at once resulting in nonstop, pulse-pounding action
  • Intense gore and vibrant realism
  • Anything in the mall is at Frank’s disposal
    • Grab environmental objects like umbrellas and benches to use as improvised weapons
    • Snatch items from different stores to use as weapons including golf clubs, lawnmowers, fry pans and more
    • Chow down on various “mall food” to revive health
  • Real time system – key events happenat certain times and if players are not mindful, important story elements and opportunities may be missed
  • Use Frank’s photojournalistic skills to capture the insanity on film; the better the shot, the better the reward will be

Dead Rising is now available at retailers across North America and carries an “M” rating for mature audiences by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board).

D1 Grand Prix (PS2)

D1 Grand Prix simulates drifting, a racing style that originated in Japan and is quickly becoming the hottest trend in U.S. racing. Drift racers purposefully put their cars into controlled slides, "drifting" around corners at up to 85 mph. Unlike traditional automobile races, drift races are judged not just on speed, but on style.

D1 Grand Prix arrives on the videogame scene just as drifting is receiving lots of attention in the national media. A June 6 story on the CBS Morning News and The Early Show called drifting a "screeching, smoking, testosterone-fueled automania," and said Americans are "taking to it like, well, boys to hot cars." CNN's Anderson Cooper also weighed in on the drifting phenomenon during the June 13 episode of Anderson Cooper 360 Degrees. "And ready or not," he said, "drifting may be about to burst into America's mainstream culture, even its streets."

With a cutting-edge physics engine, hundreds of customization options, and six diverse play modes, D1 Grand Prix brings gamers all the flashy excitement of drifting, without the danger or burnt-rubber smell.

Game features include:

  • 12 Driving Circuits from past D1 competitions including Odaiba, Tsukuba Circuit, Autopolis, SUGO, Fuji Speedway and more.
  • 30 licensed vehicles to choose from.
  • The most realistic drifting physics engine ever in a video game.
  • In-depth tutorial teaches players the art of drifting.
  • 2005 D1 Grand Prix car stats, rules, racers and racing circuits
  • Compete in official day and unofficial night races.
  • Enhanced commentary engine lets players hear what the three judges have to say in real time.
  • Six modes of play: D1 Grand Prix, Time Attack, Survival Mode, Battle Mode, Xtreme Mode, Free Run Theater (unlockable movies of actual footage of the D1 Grand Prix).

The gaming press has already begun praising D1 Grand Prix. GameSpot says D1 Grand Prix gives gamers a unique playing experience: "With three different difficulty levels, multiple tuning options for creating your ultimate drift-ready whip, and a driving model that plays like practically nothing racing fans have encountered before, D1 Grand Prix certainly sets itself apart from a crowded field of PS2 racing games."
