While a fifth installment in the Hitman franchise is
not really much of a surprise, Square Enix has yet to officially announce its existence. With the 2009 movie having done fairly well, and rumors of a second one in the planning stages, it seems we are yet another step closer to an official announcement, as

IO Interactive, known for developing Hitman and Kane & Lynch, has been hit by as many as 35 layoffs, revealed by none other than 3D Realms' George Broussard who
tweeted, "Layoffs at Io Interactive (Kane&Lynch/Hitman). As many as 35, and a project canceled. - Tis' the season." Square Enix confirms that an unspecified number of employees were let go, and neither were any specifics given on the so called canceled title.

a few months ago that IO Interactive would be in charge of Hitman 5.
Last week, actor Mark Sloan's resume stated that he did Hitman mo-cap at UK-based Rocksteady Studios for Hitman 5, but a new statement from Eidos' Livingstone says that the Batman developer is not working on the game, and as far as he knows, IO is still on the job.

Hitman's story centers around an international assassin known only as Agent 47 who works for a mysterious organization dubbed the Agency. While critically panned, the original movie (starring Timothy Olyphant) grossed around $100 million so a sequel is being worked on, and
according to the IESB, producers Adrian Askarieh, Daniel Alter and Chuck Gordon will return, while the script is written by Kyle Ward, who also wrote the Kane and Lynch script for Universal. A new Hitman game is expected late 2010.

Last year, it was reported that Vin Diesel would be starring in "Hitman: The Movie," but according to
Ain't it Cool, he is no longer on the project and has been replaced by Deadwood's Timothy Olyphant ("Seth Bullock"). Luc Besson signed on to co-produce, along with Chuck Gordon, Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter. With a script penned by Swordfish's Skip Woods, the 20th Century Fox movie is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2007.
