'Babel' And 'Nintendo Europe' Go Forward With GBA

Games outsourcing specialist Babel (www.babelmedia.com) has broken new ground after being appointed by Nintendo Europe as the main content provider for the Game Boy Advance website. It is the first time that Babel has provided editorial services for a major publisher and continues the expansion of its outsourcing package for the games industry.

The company has recently been widely praised for its work in putting Worms onto Sky’s interactive TV platform. Earlier this year, the company also launched the world’s first handheld compatibility lab aimed specifically at the games industry.

Marko Hein, European product manager, Nintendo of Europe said: “We are pleased to be working with Babel on this site, and look forward to working with them to continue to bring all Game Boy Advance fans more great news and views.

“Since the Game Boy Advance website went live in May 2001, we have had over 2.5 million viewers. The website is the number one online destination for all Game Boy Advance fans, and includes games reviews, an interview centre, bulletin boards, top tips and much, much more.”

Since June 2001, Babel has been in charge of all language translation sites for the Game Boy Advance site and has already translated content into English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. The website (www.gameboyadvance.com) is now one of the world’s most popular gaming sites.

Babel will now be writing news and reviews on a daily basis and the company will simultaneously translate this content into four European languages for the Game Boy Advance site. It means that reviews for all Game Boy Advance games will be posted online within hours of release.

The company has hired Dominic Mason, an experienced gaming journalist, to edit news that will be arriving from all around Europe and the US. The company will also be responsible for providing newsletters and a bulletin board. Other innovations will include a Contest Area, Interview Centre and a Tips and Tricks feature.

“Our experience in localisation means that providing multilingual editorial services is a natural progression for us. Publishers need to communicate with their global audiences on a daily basis and we have a network of editorial staff throughout Europe who can do just that,” said Algy Williams, managing director at Babel.

The news comes at a prodigious time for the online games industry. According to Netvalue, more than three million UK home Internet users visited games sites during November 2001, up almost half a million since the previous November.
