Intel Corporation chooses Xtreme Air Racing

by Thomas on May 29, 2002 @ 11:45 a.m. PDT

When the Intel Corporation recently needed gaming software to compliment the showing of their Northwood 2.2 GHz processor at the 2002 Game Developers Conference, they chose Bob Hoover's Xtreme Air Racing as an example of a current flight simulation that would represent state-of-the-art graphics and game play.

Xtreme Air Racing™ is a highly detailed; action packed representation of the gut-wrenching sport of air racing. Based on the Reno National Championship Air Races, held each September at the Reno-Stead Airport, located in the high desert north of Reno, Nevada, Xtreme Air Racing developers used satellite mapping to accurately capture the terrain details of the actual race course.

Flight and terrain modeling is so accurate in Xtreme Air Racing™ that it is currently being used by individual race pilots for off-season training and is being considered for use at the annual training session held at Reno for pilot qualification.

Current Reno National Unlimited Gold Champion, Skip Holm, pilot of the highly modified P-51 Mustang raceplane, "Dago Red" recently said of the game - "XAR is perfect for racing pilots in honing their racing skills, practising emergencies, engine out procedures, or just plain 'racing around the pole' flying in their ever present mode of trying to beat Dago Red!"

Continues Holm, "I'm going to use the game as a training aid, and have all my engine out emergencies in my living room from now on. If you ever wanted to experience the thrill of air racing, this is the game for you. It doesn't get any better than this."

Skip is not alone in his assessment of Xtreme Air Racing™. Last year when six time Reno National Air Race Unlimited Gold Champion and member of the Motorsports Hall Of Fame, Lyle Shelton flew Xtreme Air Racing™ during its development, he immediately agreed with Holm's view of the game:

"Xtreme Air Racing™ gives me many of the same sensations of speed and relative motion that I get when I'm flying The Rare Bear around the course at Reno," said Shelton. "The software would be a useful tool to the racing class check pilots to utilise for training race pilots. The terrain and pylon locations are pretty much what you see out there. This would be a great help to any pilot flying Reno."

Developed with the aid of actual race pilots and World War Two fighter pilot, air show pilot and Reno National Championship Air Race pace plane pilot, Mr. R.A. Bob Hoover, Xtreme Air Racing™ is the first serious flight simulation to model the high paced, "World's Fastest Motorsport."

If you think you are ready to tackle the pylons of Reno at 50 feet above the "rattlesnakes and rocks" of the rugged 8.2688 mile course at Reno, strap in, go fast and turn left!
