WineX 3.0 Blasts Linux Gaming Into The Next Dimension

by Thomas on April 16, 2003 @ 6:26 a.m. PDT

TransGaming Technologies, a leading developer of software portability solutions for the video games industry, announced today the much-anticipated release of WineX 3.0, TransGaming's flagship Linux portability product that allows PC games and applications to seamlessly and transparently run on the Linux operating system, directly out-of-the-box.

Key features of WineX 3.0 include its new Point2Play user interface and support for 250 of the industry's hottest PC titles, including support for EverQuestTM, the world's most successful Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). Linux gamers can now play the most popular, recently-released hits such as EA's Battlefield 1942TM, SimCityTM4, Medal of Honor: Allied AssaultTM and many more.

In addition to the significant technological advancements of WineX 3.0, TransGaming has also debuted its Point2PlayTM user interface, now allowing novice users to transparently deal with system and configuration items, while giving experienced users much greater control over their Linux gaming experience.

"WineX 3.0 is our most ambitious release ever and it is packed with features that propel the Linux game play experience to the next level. No other company in the world can bring Linux users the latest, greatest, and hottest games - we are absolutely pushing the innovation envelope", remarks Gavriel State, Co-CEO and CTO of TransGaming.

WineX 3.0, which includes full support for vertex programming, now has in place the most important features of the APIs that PC game programmers are using to produce today's hottest titles. Vertex programming is one of the most important technologies in use today for sophisticated character animation and similar tasks where the full matrix-multiplying power of today's graphics cards can be used directly by programs. It is this degree of support that allows WineX 3.0 to run such sophisticated, high-action games as EA's hit BattleField 1942, as well as a host of other titles.

In addition, TransGaming's technology team has developed improved copy protection and support for Linux distributions such as RedHat 9.0 and Mandrake 9.1.
