Sony Online Says 'PlanetSide' Holds FPS World Record

by Judy on July 7, 2004 @ 11:13 a.m. PDT

Last week, it was reported that another company's title had set a "world record" by having 160 simultaneous players in an online FPS server. Not only is this not a record, it's not even an average play session in PlanetSide, the world's first (and only) MMO first person title.

Sony Online Entertainment was not aware that there was a "record" being kept for simultaneous gameplay, but since it has now come to our attention, we would like to point out that PlanetSide has routinely hosted almost 500 players in a single zone, and regularly reaches 2,000 simultaneous players on a single server since the game launched on May 18, 2003.

For example: on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. PST, Sony Online Entertainment had 498 players in a single zone. On the Emerald server, on the continent of Cyssor, players from three empires (each with 166 players, equating to more than three times the other game's simultaneous player "record") battled for domination of the continent. The server hosted nearly 1500 players at 3:00 p.m. PST time across PlanetSide's 13 zones.

The all-time record for PlanetSide was set on May 25, 2003 at 10:35 p.m. PST when 3,600 players were simultaneously connected to the Emerald server during a massive battle.

If there is a world record for simultaneous players on an online FPS server, PlanetSide has set it.
